Are you double-dog sure? I grew up sneaking into Kilkare. West side is a junk yard and East side is the drag strip- North side is trees and a small creek and South is weeds and route#35.

I believe that is Gary Baker. He once owned Bristol and held the lease on Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway. He is now co-owner of Baker-Curb Racing Nationwide team.

Nice rare shots. I try and tell people that Bill has ran Chevys and Olds before this year, but they don't want to believe it! haha. He drove a Chevrolet in 78' and 79' and again in 2006 for Micheal Waltrip. He also drove a purple Dodge Aspen at Charlotte 1980.

My cousin, Wilbur Rakestraw. He ran Nascar from 1956-1961. Raced the last three Beach races at Daytona in a Convertible, and also the first three Daytona 500's along with local tracks and MARC races (now Arca)

Butch - Here's a couple more shots from the same roll - the Pendleton Brothers from Columbus. (We had lots of brothers racing at KK for some reason). The bald guy is Bob 'something' (too old to remember the full name). He was the pit gate opener for a bunch of years there. He was easy to see with the sun, and later on the lights, bouncing off his head. He was a pretty good guy - wonder what ever happened to him ? [IMG]

    Enjoy...

Hey Cody - I'm the current ARCA Co-Historian and we have no record of your cousin (Wilbur Rakestraw) winning any MARC New Car races in 1957? If he did and you can document the event we would love to be able to add him to the archives. Let me know -thanks!

Let me try and find something that says he DID. One of my historian friends told me this. I'll try and confirm it this weekend.

To Falcon: They were for Penske I do believe. After all, they bought their first car from them when Roger was switching to Chevy's. If you've ever seen Bobby Allison's Red and white #2, that's what it looked like except with #9. If I can have until this weekend, I have a tour book of Bill's that explains all of his early cars. I've never scanned before, so it may take some time.

TO Marty: That purple car is in that book I just mentioned.

I love the old wedge dirt late models!! I wasn't going to the dirt tracks when they had the really huge sideboards and stuff though. I know they hauled the mail though.

This is a great thread. like them or not wedge cars are getting a bit off topic I'd heat to see this thread get closed like some others that stray too far OT.

Agreed... but it was the early 80's, so could be considered historic! :)

At least I did post a pic of a something more relevant to the thread. :D

I thought I had copy of a pic of another of Roscoe's old cars. It hung on the Roscoe's shop wall for years.

Wedge cars was such a big part of Dirt Late Model history that it can not be over looked.

    A 72 Mazda RX-2 with a stock 12A Rotary engine.

It's one of the 2 race cars I don't still have. The other was a 70 Pontiac I tore up at Senoia Raceway the previous season. LOL
