Ive replaced the solonoid, starter, and all cables on my '61 bird. still just getting the dreaded click. could the problem be in the swing away column or do i just need to replace the ignition switch next?
What kinda shape is the battery in? Are you getting full voltage to the starter solenoid? Everything I know about these cars suggests electrical stuff can be a real demon.
Got the same issue with my 63. Lift up on the shift lever while trying to start and see if it starts. The shifter bushings wear with time and the neutral safety switch doesn't make full contact.
x2 exactly! My dad had a 60 T-bird, and it was standard practice to pull up and toward you on the shift lever while starting.
i hear there is a camp called "hot rod summer camp" try that they have a whole week dedicated to electricl gremlins , that may help! lotsa love , by the way its only $3000.00 a week. smokin deal!
joined a lil over a year ago, and THAT is your best shot at a first post? ok. carry on its gittin dark
thanks post police , why don't you go out to the garage and learn your place! just givin a friend a hard time. carry on with your bad self.
you have to get the post police , to make sure order is maintained! by the way get that car fixed and pronto!
trying.. had a 4hr starter change out today..had to remove the drag link to get it out..too fing funny for me.
Go back and check all of the battery cable connections especially the ground to the block. Make sure that the surface of the block where the cable end of it is scraped clean so that the cable end makes good contact. Just about every time someone tells me "I've done this and I've replaced that and it still won't crank over". It's a connection or ground issue. You could also jump the starter solenoid or hood a remote starter switch to it to eliminate the wiring between the ignition switch and the solenoid. And the battery still may be suspect even though it shows 15 Volts which is actually a bit high as it should show about 12.5 to `12.75 fully charged. I would try a known good battery or have that one checked to make sure it is good.
the only thing i havent checked is the ground straps. but that's next on the list. i cleaned all the contacts for the cables and applied dielectric grease to help in the connections.
Yep, both the 62 and 63 I have in the shop are the same way... I think you nailed it. Dude you deserve every bit of shit you get for that being your first post. You really need to Read This First! then do an intro here New to the H.A.M.B.? Introduce yourself here! Then you can get all snotty and whatnot.
nah, the new guy is right. i was wrong and he called me on it. i'm going to go lay down by my dish now.
regardless he should read that and do an intro, then maybe we'll have a clue who he is instead of coming off like a putz... Sincerely the non-serious builder.
the other thing to keep in mind with having to pull the shifter to start, when you let it go it likes to drop into reverse. Just pay attention to letting it back down and not just dropping it.
still cant get it to turn over regardless of how i manipulate the shift arm and column. i'm guessing i just need to bypass the whole neutral safety switch. i'd rather have a car that starts in any gear than one that wont start in Park.
car was running and driving great. been sitting for 2 weeks. so i changed all the items listed in the 1st couple of posts
