What cool ass race cars, man they would be a blast to see and hear. Love the exhaust stax out thru the hoods, thanx for the interesting post. ~Sololobo~
awesome ive read more here on 60s racing than any mag .. someone needs to publish this in a book ....... only a couple of years ago i was lucky enough to see the Custaxie in the flesh ... if my memory is working today ..then it was at the World of wearable arts museum in Nelson very cool ,,, and the chev coupe in Chch whenever i was there.... and worked with a guy who had managed to squeeze 150hp from a 1500cc cortina motor for the pre 65 racing ... the fastback anglia in Christchurch ,, was on trade me several times last year too .. someone needs to save it now .... at that time it was suggested that no less than 6 of the hot lil fastbacks were built .. as previously posted only 3-4 still exist .. .. good job !
Steve, just to correct you slightly, this coupe was originally built by my father-in-law Barry Pointon, along with Keith McGregor, and the Ferabend brothers. Barry actually called in to see Grant Sylvester about the car a couple of years ago while he was down in Christchurch, and it was on display in the showroom. I have got plenty of photos from the early Baypark, Pukekohe Moffat, Beechey, Dawson, Coppins, Fahey era and its good to read all these articles about those days. I think we are going to have to see those pics "oppo" B302
Off the top of my head I think there were only 4 Breadvan Anglias that ran in the Allcomers: Paul Faheys, Dave Simpsons, Jack Nazers, and Neil Doyles. Doyles ran a Chevy V8, the others were all Lotus T/Cs. To the best of my knowledge the Fahey car is the only known survivor.
HI Steve 38,,, and it would seem is / was for sale (ex Fahey) check this link www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=338860523
What about Robert Bartley from Wanganui? Triang.... Triumph 2.5 powered fastback anglia ? I think he got it from Clyde Collins???? or did he buy another car from Clyde afterwards?? I think I may know where the remains are ! Prior to that he had a pushrod 1760 powered A40 Farina which went to Robert Patterson in Ratahi, ended up back on the road and last I saw it was a stripped out shell at Horopito Motor Wreckers.
Found these in the Alexander Turnbull National Library http://ndhadeliver.natlib.govt.nz/content-aggregator/getIEs?system=tapuhi&id=820125

Hi There: Not sure I can remember exactly the diff info for the Custaxie but I believe it might have been a Ford 9" with a Equa-Lok or Posi-Trac. I trust this helps you. Funny the things one does remember at times like this - as I am just reflecting on our preparing a MK III Zephyer Zodiac for Robbie to race in a 6 hour race at Pukekohe (Benson & Hedges?). We stripped a brand new Zepher Zodiac car (engine, suspension, everything) and rebulit it using Ford colour-coded "purple" items (bearings, springs, etc.) as "purple" was the "largest and/or strongest" components manufactured by Ford - and so this change of components (a) reduced engine drag quite dramatically (and so increased horsepower) and/or (b) stiffened the car dramatically, thereby improving handling, etc. We did this as all competing cars in the 6 hour races had to be "Production Models" that were racing in those days and by using the largest possible "colour-coded" combinations we certainly were able to improve the vehicle's performance quite significantly. And, as the ESSO MAN might say . . . Happy Motoring.
The "Triang" was built by Malcolm Coffey who brought the Jack Nazer Cossak Escort and then had a big wreck at Levin. The Triang was well built and I remember the fabricated recessed firewall was pop riveted to the original. I think Robert Bartley then raised the roof line. He the brought the ex Glen McIntyre Odlins Fiat 124 Coupe.
Hi 97&45dcoe very interested in the Triang I have just finished resto of aussie sport sedan anglia with triumph motor riveted firewall, spooky I remember watching all these cars as a kid reading NZ hot rod mag going to the hot rod show at Addington showgrounds ,a guy still has Neil Doyles breadvan in his backyard it was in the letters page in nz classic cars
My father, Mark has started on a recreation of the Morrari and is looking for any pics or info on the original car. Any help is much appreciated. The chassis will have to be recreated from drawings too.
It is amazing to think that they did that to a rare Ferrari (only 4 were made) even when it was a used up race car. Equally amazing is the fact that it has been completely restored back to original with the original drive train back in it. It was chassis # FL/9001
Hi all Found this pic on my computer, but don't know how old it is or where it was taken, but presume it is at a recent pre-65 meet
