Reporting in from Hartselle Alabama. I am new to this site. My father introduced me to old cars in circa 1960-1961 when he bought a 1931 Ford Model A pickup truck that was more than 200 miles away from home. My mother drove us to Georgia to get the truck and I rode back with my father. I would have been age 6 then depending when it actually was. I wont forget the drive home midsummer in the south. The wooden floor boards were so rotted they dropped out real soon. The exhaust pipe broke off just before the muffler under my feet in Rome Georgia. The temperature inside the cab went from hot to real hot and the noise was unforgiving. The trip seemed to take forever in my young mind and then got worse. Not far from home we ran into a summer downpour. The truck had the stock drivers side only manual windshield wiper that I became a make due drive motor for it. Manipulating the wiper didnt do a whole lot of good as the steam coming up through the open floor made the inside of the windshield a mess too. Dad did a rebuild of the truck, restoration is not exactly the correct term, and added hydraulic brakes from a later model Mercury. The truck was what my mother drove daily for years. (The local police didnt like her taking me to school without any doors during the rolling rebuild so she cut some clothes line and strung it across the door ways. The police didnt like that either but they let her get by with it for a couple of months.) When I learned to drive it was in that truck and it was my daily driver for the first six months after I got a license until I bought a 1966 Mustang in 1969. We put a lot of miles on the Model A. I have worked on and driven all kinds of street, race, and work vehicles between a 1902 Oldsmobile and my wifes 2007 Ford. I enjoy many different types and brands of vehicles by my passion is original Cobras from 1963-1965. There are very few factory made vehicles made since 1970 that I find interesting but still find old Fords, especially early hot rods, a treat. The current stable includes my fathers favorite 1930 Ford Model A touring car we kept after his passing, a very near stock unrestored 1964 Cobra, a 1965 Cobra that has been modified by everybody that has had it since day one including me, a 2003 Ford SVT Focus, 2006 Ford F250, and 2007 Ford Freestyle (and a 2002 IH Case tractor). Welcome from Rockmart GA, about +/- 20 miles south of Rome. My cousin Perry "Bill" Bailey is a long-time radio DJ in your area. Henrietta the '38 Ford pickup and Ozelle the '55 Ford send friendly horn honks.
Dan I have admired your collection of fine autos for years.. Welcome from the corner of kelley cemetary and martain luther king roads in good old Huntsville AlabamA.. Bobby..
Well shoot. I thought that thread was for me. Good to see others from AL. I'm finally registered in Auburn. Dad had a shop in Ozark when I was growing up. Worked on cars and tractors and most anything else that broke. It's a family tradition. I expect I'll be primarily a lurker here, but all the "patina" talk hooked me in. Not because I necessarily prefer patina, but because the rags are glorifying it...and I'll take any opportunity to have my rusty junk considered as "in." Cheers to Dan in Hartselle...and everyone else too.
