How about "california rake"-goin' to the drags-an order of fries-ponchos(pontiac)- mopes(mopars) henrys hummers(fords)-Copper or fuzz for police, "race car in tow" in shoe polish on the back window. Some times you had to wonder who was classing the cars at the track(no rear view mirror- a/gas). Diggers, Gassers, Paradise road- be there or be square. Sunday..Sunday..Sunday. Just a few. Later, Matt.

  6. Mopes made me remember "this baby will motate=get down the road in a hurry.

Hangin' it out there= drifting it around a corner.

Drifting a pre drifter term for sliding the ass end out in a corner and keeping the gas on.

Backin' it in -- a sprint car term from before sprint cars had brakes.

Hot shoeing -- nothing to do with cars a flat trackers term from before flat trackers term from before flat trackers had brakes.

Sprint cars and flatrackers without brakes those were good times let me tell ya.

  7. Also used to mean doing U Turn "flip a Bitch and lets go back"

    My dad loved those things

I ask the "kids" at the strip if their car noses over before the finish line. Blank stare. Still a race term as "My car nosed over at a thousand feet til I swapped to 4.56's." I was at the grocery store in my 33 recently and an old dude said " Nice Jalopy", brought a tear to my eye! peace

  10. Well damn I never would have thought of that. Of course it raises the question does a full race cam land in the 80% area???

    The 3/4 @ .75% is logical.

Cherry Bombs - similar to a Smitty - we also had them in fireworks but smaller than a
    M-80'
Yeah and now "I" am a chrome dome.

Back talking (exhaust) - got a few tickets for that
Stack em up - all we could get in the trunk for $.25 a person drive-in movie

I've always heard it used in context to refer to a hop up job. You sent your mill off to get a GO-job at the machine shop, or it could refer to a souped up motor itself.

You've got the period right (they were usually 50's cars), but the term a little off I think. Jitney was usually used to refer to a cab I believe. In fact I think that's what a google search for Jitney will get you.

The bootleg U turn. Robert Mitchum showed us all how to do that in "Thunder Road". Our local drive-in (Siloam Springs, Ark) ran that movie on a weekend in August every year for many years.
