Welded spider gears were called Lincoln Lockers 'cause they were usually welded with a Lincoln Welding Machine.

Grandad used to always correct me when I used the word "motor" to describe an engine. He used to build electric motors and worked at a hydro electric plant as well as for the B&O railroad. He said "motors" were electric and engines had pistons and cranks regardless of whether they were gasoline, steam or diesel.

It seemed like, at one time that all the hot set-ups were "de-stroked". Now of course everybody wants a stroker motor.

When I was younger, "Cherry" and "Mint" were probably the most used terms to describe a nice car.

You'd think terms like Police Interceptor would be dead by now, but I just heard that one a few weeks ago.

Dump tubes. A piece of pipe welded to the header pipe and capped off. Pipe wrench to take the caps off the dump tube. (wrench could also be used in a rumble) Dennis D

  17. Come on Brad - That isn't an old Hot Rod saying and rednecks still get T Shirts at WalMart with it on it

    WTH? Never heard those

    Still VERY COMMON!

So then it became "Pedal to the Metal"

Some of us still say Thin Wall Henry

That's cuz Bitchin, Slots and Big N Littles are still used and M-50's was a short depressing era duting the late 70's - 80's

    Used it just today!

Carburetors were "pots," or "jugs," cars lowered in front were "raked," different sized tires were "big-and-littles" ... anything done badly was "Mickey Mouse" (maybe that's still true?), dual exhausts were "twice-pipes," geez, are we really that old???

  23. Nasty Nurstane - Nitromethane

    Spaghetti - Too much chrome

Built - hopped Up ("That car has a built engine")

Soup Job - Hot Rod, car with a hopped up engine

    Huffer - Blower, Supercharger

    Brain Bucket - Helmet

Rail Job or Rail - Dragster

Pop Up Pistons - Domed Pistons for raising compression ratio

    Bump Stick - Camshaft

    Smittys - Glass Packs

Motor - Engine (I use to hear this all the time way back, not so much anymore)

Propeller Shaft - Drive Shaft (not so much a hot rod term as it is an old automotive term)

    Meats - Rear Tires

Put on the skids - Applied Brakes

That car is Tits! It has Twice pipes and all sorts of do-hickeys

  27. Always knew Door Slammer to be a Draag Race car based on a regular production car with working doors (as versus a Rail job or Funny car)

A four door was just your mom's car

In the early '60's our neighbors had a "jitney" for hunting, a '54 Chebbie with everything cut off except except the hood to keep the rain 'n snow out, the dash, cowl 'n windshield, and the 4 seats- plenty of room for duck decoys, ice chest, etc., where the trunk used to be. Piece of railroad iron on each end for bumpers. No doors, no seat belts, no brainz
"Dust 'im" meant knock that fool on his butt
A "cut down" motorcycle had everything the didn't make it go faster removed- a "bobber" is similar in appearance, but more of a customizing effect than speed

    Helmets were "brain buckets"

Hydraulic brakes were "juice brakes," mechanical brakes were "press-and-pray" brakes

    Blowers were "lungs" or "huffers"

and primer was "primer," never "suede"
