    Dave,
In your instructions above for using a GM control module (to test other than GM dist.), are you using an external 12-volt power source? If so, what are doing with the ground (negative) from it, to complete the circuit?
I recently picked up a Sun DT-504 Distributor machine and need to make (or buy) a pulse amplifier for testing electronic distributors.
    Thanks.

I have a couple of Sun dist machines and the strobe works on neither one. I want to build a Pulse Amp but have to fix the strobes first. Any suggestions as to where to start on fixing the strobes would help.

Anyone else try this and know how it all works?

Bump for this old thread, and I have 2 questions:

    1) my strobe quit [Sun 400], so could I somehow use a timing light as a workaround? if so, how would I hook it up?

    2) wiring up a module to use with hei, msd, etc is outlined above, but could someone explain/outline the entire wiring instructions [for example, where to hook up the - side of the 12v supply]

    Thanks!

Bert, the ground from the external 12v supply hooks to the body ( mounting screws ) of the hei module..
Sorry I did not see this sooner..

sweet, thanks dave! i bought this dizzy tester several years ago and it worked once before the strobe quit! i needed to tweak a couple more distributors so i drug the thing back out, and now am trying to remember how it all hooked up. i picked up a module, and have a 12v battery out of one of our quads so i thing i should have everything covered, hopefully. most of our stuff is msd any more, so if i can figure this out it would help a ton. thanks again!

Dave: I must still not be awake this morning, as I can't get it right in my head for some reason...but maybe my ignorance can help someone else down the road! So, care to fill in the blanks below?

    GM hei module
    W terminal [left side]:
    G terminal [left side]:

    B terminal [right side]:
    C terminal [right side]:

    MSD pickup
    Violet wire:
    Green wire:

    Sun dizzy machine
    Red lead:
    Black lead:

    12v source
    + lead:
    - lead:

Oh, and while you're at it, could you figure in a work-around to use my timing light, as my strobe has quit?

Ok, I'm gonna guess at this, so everyone check my work:

    GM hei module
W terminal [left side]: violet wire (+) of MSD trigger
G terminal [left side]: green wire (-) of MSD trigger

    B terminal [right side]: 12v (+)
C terminal [right side]: black lead from Sun machine (-)

    MSD pickup
Violet wire: W (+) terminal on module
Green wire: G (-) terminal on mudule

    Sun dizzy machine
    Red lead: 12v (+)
    Black lead: C terminal (-)
Distributor lead: C terminal on module (????)
    Ground lead: to distributor housing

    12v source
    + lead: B terminal (+) on module
    - lead: module body/screw (-)

    Am I close?

Well, I got my Sun SDT working finally...I had to tear the thing open, and drip a little solder here and there, and clean some of it, but the strobe is working again! I need to throw on an MSD dizzy and see if I can get it to work via the module, but I haven't had a chance yet.
