  3. drags in those days were so much more home grown, just alot of guys showing up with the cars they drove all week, so obsessed that they would set up an event inside just to race in the off season.

And thats not all they raced there over the years. They raced midgets there often sometimes going in & out & sports cars also. Thats a babuska not big hair, comon in Chcago esp in winter. Thats tame compared to funny cars on north ave in the summer.

I was there never missed one in two years. Fuel altereds the first Sunday.
The nitro fumes were unbelievable. They only did that once. The door way into the next building eat up plenty of cars. You never hit the brakes till you got through the first set of doors

Now thats pretty wild, imagine the noise in there. Takes some big balls to do that, flying through a gap in the wall at 80mph, scary stuff.

I guess they did the same thing that the Indoor Midget racers have done for traction for 50 years .. They used Coke a Cola syrup or concentrate stickey shit. How long was the strip?? 330 ft or some body have any idea.. Thank you for posting..

My older brother went with his (at the time) 62 Grand Prix.

Prick (RIP) wouldn't take me along.

I guess in retrospect my mom would have kicked his as as I was only 9 years old then.

We have a original program from that event around here somewhere.

  22. While hanging out with some friends at the Cheaterama, I met an elderly gentleman who raced in the late 50's and early 60's. I asked him if he ever been to the indoor drag racing in Chicago. He told me that he not only been there, he raced. He ran a '62 Impala with a 409. I don't know if he ran the car in '62 or later, but he told me ran a speed of over 78 mph going through the doorway. Think about that with bias tires! He said the Mopar guys (Ramchargers) were running through @ 92 mph!
I asked him if he ever seen someone hit the wall and he said he saw a new Corvette get totaled.
An observation, look at the opening in the pic dated Dec. 30, '62 and how much it was widened in pic dated Jan. 5, '64.
I'm just fascinated by all this.
