Just got my hands on a 55 buick special with a 322 nailhead (I think) need help starting it It sounds like the firing order is off fire coming out of the carb I set the wires at 12785463 and all possible order on the cap same diffrence what am I doing wrong?
But here it is in a nut shell F.O. 1 2 7 8 4 5 6 3 :smash: Engine left bank(drivers side)2,4,6,8 right bank 1,3,5,7 Dist rotation clockwise looking down from the top of engine. Hope this helps you out. You can also locate the firing order on the intake manifold:thumbsup: stolen from Team Buick website-hope it helps
Thanks tried all that thinking timing chain is off does any one have a pic of how the timing chain lines up?
sounds like an intake valve might be sticking open to me, remember the car might have been parked for this reason. could have a lobe off the cam too.
Just because you have the wires in the correct order does not mean you're out of the woods. Did you find TDC on the #1 cylinder (on compression) and line up the rotor with the #1 plug wire?
Open up the throat of the carb and pour a little transmission fluid and spin it over. It might help loosen up the valves if they are stuck.
It's time for a compression test, if it is a valve it will isolate which one or ones...............................................
Then there is another problem. Could be anything from a thrown rod to who knows what. If you have a sticky valve or two, it should still fire, although it will run crappy. The compression check should be the first thing you do. It will tell you a lot. Don't dump a bunch of "either" down the carb. It won't cure anything. Take it one step at a time. If you have decent compression, spark at the right time, and fuel it should light up
If you are running your spark plug wires thru the cover on the side of the head/engine, there is a factory spec on their placement, like a braid, that will keep them from misfiring. Just a thought.
Ok guy's here's the skinny I just removed my valve covers and discovered that my push rods are bent to hell. What in the world would cause this. From what I have learned these are not intrusive valves so what the *!@# only one valve is sticking the number 6 intake but 8 push rods were bent bad.
Would mechanical timing do this? Or does anyone know if the push rods are all the same or ar their diffrent sizes for intake and exhaust?
My next thing is to rip off the timing cover. can anyone tell me what the gears should be set to up down towards each other or what?
Wait, so earlier in the thread you said the timing chain was off, so...you put it back on without verifying the cam timing marks?
you probably have 2 valves stuck closed along with the one stuck open, too many reasons to list why a valve job is your best option now
The easiest way to tell a 322 from a 264 from a visual, the 322 will have a harmonic balancer and the 264 doesn't.
