[IMG]Guys, just purchased some "chinese made" lug nuts from a reputable auto parts chain, they were for my back up rims for my gasser.....I have them milled and drilled for the racing studs to extend thru.....as I need full length studs for racing events.

Once Drilled thru then end, We found that the ACORN part was thin stamped steel ...... formed and brazed to the shank?
How can these be legal? My machinest called and said I hope you don't use these for racing.......

My Rusty Old 70's Cragar lug nuts were solid......I will use them until my McGard Lug Nuts arrive. ;)

Will add pics later.....going to unwrap one half way for better pics.
If you go some laying around you may want to look at them closely......might scare you.

Are you talking about the the outside end of it or the wheel side? If its the outside this has been done on U.S. stuff back when.

I've seen those, it's basically a nut with a thin acorn cap pressed over it, right?

I think they've been making them like that a lot longer than they've been unloading them off ships.

The factory nuts on my '72 Camino SS were built like that.

We recently picked up the regular lug nuts and replaced the mismatched ones on the '47 Merc from Advanced Auto - they weren't run down hard, just enough to see if we liked the wheel treatment. Taking them back off, we found 3 out of 5 would just strip the threads. Absolute Shit! They were something ridiculous like $2 a piece. Went to our local tire guy, and he let us dig out GOOD ones from his bucket for free. We should have started with him in the first place.

Made in China.....Hmmm....Do they have lead in them????? Oh....That's the childrens toys that they make.....Do they have melamine in them??? That's what they use for filler in pet food. Course it will kill your pet, though...... Maybe, they're just made with slave labor, like many things in China...... Made in China means P.O.S.:mad::mad:

Yup, the Chinese didn't invent those. As for safety, it's no more dangerous than any open ended lug nut. The acorn "cap" is a stamped add on after the nut is manufactured. You get no more than you pay for no matter where it's made.

all right, who makes good ones? i wouldn't trust the steel of anything made over there anyway, they use very inferior low quality steel, I put ARP studs in, no point in putting crap lug nuts on them

Yes, those McGard nuts hold up very well. Am I safe to assume that they're still made here? They were when I bought my last batch.

Why do you all think the price of scrap is up.Most of the stuff is headed to China to make things to sell back to us.Not to be political but the cost in the U.S. to open and run a business has got so many taxes, regulations, insurance, bonds, workmans comp. and the list goes on no wonder all the crap goes overseas. Saw an article the other day that all the Dodge Challengers are being built in Canada and Mexico, just like the H D motorcycles.

Not picking directly on the original poster but I cannot understand people who insist on buying cheap & then complaining about how they got screwed over by (China) junk.

McGard's are still made in the good old USA, right down the street from here in Orchard Park, NY.

Just stating a fact, must be cheaper cost for manufacturers to move all the production and assembly process because of cost here.

"An incident in 2007 involved melamine which had been purposely added as a binder to fish and livestock feed manufactured in the United States. This was traced to suppliers in Ohio and Colorado."

    Yeah, those damn Chinese!

More damn China junk! I tell ya, no matter what i buy, if i can find the same part made in the USA i will pay double for it! Some stuff you cant avoid buying Asian import crap, but you guys are right the stuff can be flat out dangerous. Cant you just buy lug nuts that are already drilled and threaded? I had those on my drag race mustang with extended studs? maybe your talking about something a bit different than i had.

the root of the inferior Chinese products is the origin of the steel. China imports steel from Northern Australia, Queensland State, Aspley to be exact. Loads of crap around those parts.

The first three threads of any nut or bolt is taking 97% of the load on a fastener, the cap is only cosmetic the rest of the threads after 3 ain't doing nothing for strength. I'm more worried about the quality of the steel and heat treat methods. Wheel nuts need to be heat treated as well as wheel studs.

Yea thats a true story. I grew up near Allentown, PA and the home of the Bethlehem Steel Corp. That area (Lehigh Valley) was booming during the World Wars and if you look at most of the surface to air guns and gunships all the barrels of them were manufactured there too. The place is literally a few miles long sitting on a river. Most of the steel this country used was made there. Then slowly the US started buying it from Korea at almost half the cost as we could manufacture it for. Lets say the rest is history! Now they built parts into a casino, sports complexes etc. Its ashame, almost any baby boomer in that area had worked there and ever family has had someone who worked there. I have been on jobsites and worked with many ol timers who started out welding in that facility and thought they would retire from there. It employed thousands and you made a really good living! Plants like this are dying off one by one in this country and its sickening to say the least. We are the masters of our own demise, always trying to save a buck no matter what the cost. Damn, this stuff gets me all heated up! haha! wow this was long winded, sorry guys

else pays that price, so I can have what I want.

while it has to do with saving a buck, part of the problem is the cost to comply with the regs and the labor contracts. We succeeded in regulating ourselves right out of the steel business.

As the auto manufacturers were being forced to stop using chrome plating, exposed lug nuts started to be clad in a stainless veneer. I don't remember when this started, but the stainless clad lug nuts have been on new cars for a long time now, and yeah, they are cheeze. Is that what we are talking about here?

It all comes down to the material quality as already mentioned and what kind of quality testing is done when the finished product comes state side. If anyones familiar with 6 sigma or ISO quality control systems they'll understand what I'm referring to with batched sampling that can statistically eliminate a lot of rejects if a company wants to build a reliable, quality product. Obviously there are a TON of crappy parts made in asia by companies that couldn't care less but that's not to say they're all bad when it's usually crap specifications to save a buck on the company's end.

I've got a couple chinese forgings for the front axle and t-case of an OT rock crawler that isn't being built with any shit, noone makes the parts state side because the price is impossible to beat and the quality is very high due to the company having very strict policies in place since they have a no questions asked lifetime warranty on their parts. According to some sources the material is US sourced, shipped to China on the return trip from deliver for forging in large runs, then shipped back here, inspected, and machined.
