I just picked up a motor that is suppose to be out of a 77 Corvette. On the front pad by the alternator is stamped 11408073vp. on the back is cast 10966086. I have searched but haven't been able to come up with anything. Any ideas?
Sounds like a disco era Vette! Did the motor come with finned valve covers??? If so, it might be an L-82 motor... But, I could be wrong..
With a casting number like that... NOT out of a 1977 Corvette. I am guessing that the casting number is actually 10066036 which is 1986 and newer 350.
Yeah, right. EVERYTHING has a vette motor. This was in a vette, I pulled it. Gonna recheck numbers....
That's easy..Its a 4 bolt main, high nickel block, with 2.02 heads out of a (insert your year and Chevy car of choice here)..Haha. Sorry couldn't help myself. Good luck with your find!
Does it really matter? Unless youre trying to restore a 77 to exact, then its just an old 4 bolt 350 block...sold a bare one a couple weeks ago for $50.00. Wasnt much special with "disco era" Vette motors, even the L-82's, I rather have the Vette, even if half of it was destroyed. Actually have a complete 350 out of my 77 Vette that I ripped out, for a big block, on a stand over in the garage. I think my even saying 77 might violate the traditional nature of this site, lol.
Don't sweat it!! I wouldn't buy anything newer than a '82 when it comes to Vettes... I do prefer '73 and older though...
try this <table border="0" width="121%"><tbody><tr><td width="10%">10066036 </td> <td width="10%"> </td> <td width="10%"> 350 </td> <td width="10%"> </td> <td width="8%"> 2/4 </td> <td width="40%"> Target Master/Goodwrench crate motor, 2-piece rear seal, "Hecho en Mexico" </td></tr></tbody></table>
Iirc from my dealership days the later Target motors [when they changed from blue to black for color] will have "Hecho en Mexico" cast in the lifter valley area or on the back of the block itself where it bolts to the trans.
The letter codes only work if the complete code has the right format. The stamped number would have one letter for plant, 4 for date, and 2 or 3 for the suffix. for example F0315VP which is quite different from what he said is on the block. It's a mexican crate motor.
