Cool! Notice the cats saddle shoes in the picture. I remember a friend in K.C. having one of these and I went to a race with him, those little puppies hauled some ass. I think his ran on alchohol. Thanx for the memory lane trip ~sololobo~
wonder if anyone from Reading, PA or nearabouts has any memories or photos of that particular track in action? Thank you ryan!
When I was a kid my neighbor gave me a box of tether engines and gears: Red head McCoy, Fox 34 and a few other others. The've have had a dusty place on the shelf, maybe its time to build one. Looks like you can still buy a kit: www.tethercar.com
I'm doing some cars now, the Bunch Midget ('40s) The larger car is 16" length, smaller is 10". (I also have parts made for a smaller 8" car) Model airplane engines are fitted with a flywheel and simple coupling, all mine are front engine, rear wheel drive. Differential gears are still available, 1/8" diameter rear axle. (Gears can be bored for larger axles) Diff housings and bells made from cup-type freeze plugs and steel tubing. Hard part is the '37 Ford tube front axle. This had to be curved, then rolled into an oval. Bosses for wishbones had to be mfd from steel rod, bored, axle bored, then silver soldered in, same for king pin bosses. Nothing finished, just a lot of work-in-progress. Didided time with my Roadster & Tub. (fullsize)
An older co-worker of mine, Rex, who recently retired, has quite a few of those old nitro engines, NOS in the box from the '30's-'50s. He brought a box full of 'em into work one day....cool stuff.... His dad owned a hobby distributer business during the '60's, which helped pay for Rex's Kart racing career.....from late '50's till '80's....
i was kinda worried when i saw "fast and furious". but then saw Ryan posted it, i thought, "this will be bad ass". boy was i correct!
Either before my time or else they never made it to the Deep South. Extremely cool. We had the gas-fired model airplanes, but no cars. Puts our old slot cars to shame. Of course, it started in California! Love all this old stuff.
Too Cool and they are still out of my price range for extra toys to add to my collection. I got to spend some time watching them run at Plesanton a few years ago and I could get hooked on them real quick given the chance.
you're right Slim............ the first step toward recovery is admitting you have a problem! Ryans problem is probably lack of garage space....... poor guy!
Ryan, where do you find all these cool clips?! I love tether car stuff. A good friend of mine had quite a collection untill recently... Does any body else remember the Good guys tether set ups they did at the shows when they tried to revive it about fifteen years or so ago? Spent a lot of time watchin'!
Those of you who are lucky enough to be in Fresno this March 19th to attend Blackies hot rod show , need to make time to cross back over town to 99 and ashland and beat it to the VFW hall to see the big Tether car show and sale , very cool stuff, heres a few cars I have and have built as well as the wire wheels. Chris
Very cool vid! I don't know much about tether cars, but I thought they were connected to a cable that attached to a central pole? Those cars were on a board track. So what the heck am I thinking of?
