back in 57 I built a 4''324 block, and the machine shop didn't have any problems getting me pistons. I just didn't know what they were.

What are you going to put that engine in Dave?
    How about something like a '60s style dragster,like a Chassis Research K-88.
    Talk about cheap thrills...man!

I'm not quite sure. My current (and first) project is a 27 T coupe that I inherited from my father in law. I know it won't fit in there but it is a natural for another project....

ohh an old boat engine, cool

you should build an dragster boat out of it, to many old boat engines get stripped of their stuff... i would love to have an little chriscraft or something with an olds engine in it

No kidding, I have personally stripped down four ex-speedboat engines (early Olds rocket) and have always wished I didn't have to in order to get the parts I wanted. All four engines were ones that boat owners had decided to get rid of because they couldn't find replacement parts, etc.

No problem with the 4 inch bore for normal use we use to do this a lot and not untill we started running fuel was it a problem.

BUT ............real ttrick is to start with a 394 block bore it .125 then turn a 455 crank to use as stroker , pistons and all of a sudden you got a 490 cubic inch motor with that "early Olds" look and boy will that son of a bitch fly !

do you have any more specific details about the 455 crank in a 394 block?
backyardbeliever and his dad (a master machinist) were looking at doing that particular swap.

So what did you do to change the thrust from # 5 to # 3????????

    ??????????????????????

I think it would be a lot easier to order a custom billet crank...

Hey , bringing back a great thread, the next saga. ive put 194 valves in the exhaust they fit great but now i have to pocket the pistons. they are just kissing the tops. ive read that i should allow 100 thousands squish. does this sound right cant wait to get the heads back on. all stainless and smoothed.

I'm still waiting from our Rocket experts if this crank swap is at all possible or feasable?
Sure would be cool if it was.

Bringing this back, so when I put my 371 pistons in my 324 with 324 heads, which head gasket can I use? 324 head gaskets will stick into the bore and I hear something about having to use 324 head gaskets only on 324 heads. Is there a 371 gasket made which will easily work on my #8's or do i have to modify something? I haven't purchased a set of 371 head gaskets to explore. Anything to know before I purchase?

BTW, the plan is a 371 piston in a 324 with 324 rods in my '55 block, an isky 505T roller, sbc roller lifters with the later olds tie-bars, a set of McGurk adjustable rockers, 1.5 dia double springs (about 150 lbs @1.75" and 450 libs @full lift), sbc valves (1.84in, 1.5ex) on mildly worked #8 heads milled .040. 2 wcfb's on a offy 2x4 and mallory dual point. Suggestions? Just need the head gasket help.

You use the gasket for the head year. Unless you have the 4" bore in a 303 then use the 324's
