Yes we had surplus aircraft lap belts and and a single hoop rollbar with braces back to the rear frame rails. Real basic, but we had lots of fun. You could total out on Saturday night and have a new car ready for the following Saturday race. It is amaizing that more drivers and spectators were not injured or killed.

Found another one, Dad both of these at the same time. The 21 was called a "B" car and the X was a "super C" car. Both were driven by a Guy named Al McDaniel.

  9. In the mid sixties our Neighbor would buy tri-fives for $100-$300 and the first thing he did was sledge hammer the glass out of them before he welded the safety tubes and the doors shut!

Thank Goodness they started becoming more expensive... so by the early seventies he moved on to cheap Chevelles!

Where the heck did you guys find photos of stock car racing in Soldiers Field, that is really very cool. A lot of the addresses are not that far from my home.

My father was a dirt modified racer in upstate ny from the 50's thru the 70's and they cleaned out this part of the country off 35-40 fords and 36-38 chevy's coups and coaches.

Back in the mid '60's I was an announcer at a dirt oval track up here in Canada.

Jalopy racing was the "hit of the night" - Saturdays. There were so many Fords (pre 50's) destroyed every night, that the supply of old Fords dwindled to almost nothing around here!

If I only knew how rare they would become; I would have bought them all! Dints and all!

2 of my Dad' cars. He ran asphalt. Good drivers kept them pretty straight for the year or two. Dick Dunlevy,Ralph O'Day, Joe King.
I remember him putting on a new body every couple years, From 50s' to late 60s'. I'd watch them build the cars and engines for years.
Gave me an education. Carb.and ignition tune ups. building cars..

    >I'm saving up parts to build a vintage car.
need wide 5s' hubs and wheels
