if im not mistaken that is john russells from lebanon,ohio. he now runs a clone of it and knows where this car is .
This poor image was taken with my trusty Kodak Brownie at Delmar, DE in 1965 which shows my old friend John Thropp before his Jr Stock days.
They should bring back this class, to make drag racing a participant sport again. Drags started to get kids off street racing, now that drags are pro big$$$ events, kids are street racing again. Big $$$ seems to ruin everything for the non-affluent
I remember the first time I saw this car. I was just a kid and was walking around the pits at National Trail Raceway. They had the hood off of the car and you could get a clear view of the motor. It was definitely a strange looking beast. I heard that later they tried a more conventional type cylinder head motor, but it never ran as quick as the one with the Gurney heads.
"The Rumbler"... Photo taken between 1968-1971. It ran AHRA Modified Production during that time with a AMC Cross-Ram, Dual-Quad motor.
I love this thread, I know they're a little O/T but does anyone have any pics of Super Modified Mavericks? I'd really like to see some more cars like mine, hell maybe even mine back in the day...

What were the NHRA rules on rear slicks size in this class? Say 1969 to '71 seasons. Thanks in advance.
1971- "Must fit in original outer wheelwell, inner wheelwell may be modified." Along with the ProStocks, the beginning of the narrowed chassis cars. Larry T
wow!!I got to know John in his last few years me and my dad would go and hang out with him at the races whenever we could he was a great guy and a great driver!!!RIP John and his son Todd has been one of my dads friends for years and does his father proud another great driver we still go and hang out with him and Mary at the track whenever they go and great pics of the 2 cars!

Some here may remember Clem LaChance's 6 cylinder Maverick. The car was for sale a year or so ago on racingjunk.com. Here's a video of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Epuw26k--hs This 40 Studebaker was Clem's ride in the early 70's. The Stude was a regular at Dover Dragway. I always thought these early Studebakers made great gassers.
