The 6 cyl looks like a 216 or early 235 chev. No idea on the v8. Never seen anything like that before.
The V8 looks like a Vulcan aircraft engine, but I can's see the holes for the sparkplugs (hemi type).
The V8 doesn't appear to have any intake passages except perhaps between the valves. How big is it? Maybe it is a truck diesel? Are there spark plug holes or perhaps a place for diesel injectors. I have no idea what it is. Notice there is a distinctive shape to the rear end of where the valve cover would go which someone might recognise on a complete engine.
I think you're right, it's likely a diesel...I was hoping it was a hemi Oh well. Here's an image of a Ford diesel with the valve cover off: http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/818541-diesel-starting-problems-2.html
First one is an International Powerstroke found in Ford trucks and the second is an early stovebolt Chevrolet engine
#2 engine is late 30s judging by the trans(i have one too) and its a 216 because of the side cover goes up onto the head.
If you get a chance, get the trans off the 216 - looks pre- war & they're getting hard to find. There might be some parts someone can use if it hasn't weathered badly.
