(Glad to finally be allowed in the HAMB club. Cheers to the Jalopy-meisters!)

A few years ago I started working on this rusted out 53 Chevy truck.

I decided that paint was overrated and elected to keep the rust, since the crazy hotrod mags now think it's ok. I've added plenty of new parts but managed to keep them hidden. Not sure what I'll do when it's time to fix those massive rotten spots in the cab. Anyway...

I bought a new set of tailgate chains which stood out like a sore thumb. The character of this old truck was now in question. I tried soaking the chains in a lye solution, being as that's the solution to most every rusty old part problem (WD40 is for the weak, ha), but the chains remained shiny.

Then it came to me. The other rusty old part solution is fire. I didn't think I could consistently heat the chains with a torch so I dropped that idea. On the other hand a BBQ grill works like a charm!!! The chains went from silver to black/rust and now blend in perfectly.

Disclaimer: you probably shouldn't risk changing the metallurgy of structural parts this way, but cosmetic items are simple.

a bucket of water and muriatic acid. Eats the zinc away and leaves the steel REALLY ready for rusting.

  19. Now I know why I was craving BBQ at the last cruise-in. Next time I park next to you I expect BBQ pork ribs, not just scuppernong grapes. PBR would be good too!

How about make the rest of the truck just as nice as the chains? Good a place as any to start with anyway.

Good one Zman, Funny story, I worked on a girl from phoenix's chopped A P/U before we drove it to Viva, I used vintage cans cut down for air cleaners on the 3 dueces... Only problem being from AZ. nothing rust... Hmmmm, some rock salt and a lot of beer 5 days later Rusted/Ready! Funny part if you ever saw the episode of rides (_at Rods) they did a close up shot of those same air-cleaners I was helping rust.... I'm the guy that talked to you about your Buick roadster years ago..still have mine now in NY.

Maybe it is traditional. I pumped gas in the 60s and an old scrawny filthy chicken farmer drove one like that. There was chicken drippings tracked onto the front floor so deep that the gas pedal almost would get stuck. Plently in the bed, too. Worst part was he had it all over his clothes and was always chewing something that made yellow/brown goo drip from the corners of his mouth. I hated to see him come in for gas. The whole stinking smelly ordeal is flashing back right now. thanks
