I hear antique dealers talking of patina and provenance. Is faux provenance the next trend?

When I picture patina, I think of paint that has a faded/weathered/matte look to it, maybe some sunbaked paint as well, or light surface rust on wear areas such as steps, etc. Full on surface rust isnt patina though.

This would be my opinion of 2 examples. Not rotted, nicely weathered...

    Novatattoo & Bloomdogs respectively.

  8. Both of these barn find beauties have a genuine patina that you can only get after layin around for 75 or so years. The Ford was painted in '49 and trimmed in'55 and the Chev was painted in '37.

I got a kick out of the guy that took a nice 37 Ford Manolty fiberglass car ,painted it rustoleum red, then painted it a dark color, sanded through on various spots and went as far as to drill hundreds of 1/8 inch holes in the rear body panel to look like rust holes with a little rust running out the holes.I think it was featured in American Rodder Mag about 5 years ago. I usually dont care to look at fiberglass cars but that guy caught my attention.LOL.

Patina is what you get when you neglect taking care of metal parts. Gary

I think he asked "what's your idea of patina?". Anybody could give 2 shits less if you like it or not.

I disagree. Would you paint over the Mona Lisa because it's getting kinda old looking ? How about a Picasso, he painted those a long time ago...
    This car is patina perfection.

    I dig the roadster - BUT -

He used OLD leather for his NEW interior...

    You don't see the contradiction?

Same thing as making NEW paint look OLD.

It also looks like spray can black over gray primer over rust - not "original patina"

Another one that likes girls w/ unshaved legs and armpits, and god knows what else......what a bunch of weirdos... lol ...Zap!

This is the Golden Nugget, built in the 60s, one of Watson's first 'flake jobs, i must admit i dont know its whole story but Bad Bob said that the current owner thinks both Bill Hines and Barris did work on this truck.
As far as patina i think its perfect the way it is, maybe the wheels/tires should be kept clean ....but hell, who am i to judge.

Anyways, of course restored back to its former glory would be overkill, but as it is now, it has more soul than the average retarded human being, its not dirty cause its been neglected, it dirty cause its been used to death. It earned all of its wear.
