Pfffttt - it's a hearse, not a hot rod or a custom...

  7. Exactly what I am doing with mine.. I am looking for doors from a 2 door. I swear these coaches were made for "little people" to drive. Front doors are small and the seat is right on the steering wheel.

    the book I mentioned is:

Professional Cars: Ambulances, Hearses and Flower Wagons by Gregg Merksamer

    ISBN 0-87349-642-9

I'll spare the full recap other than to say by this point Henney was exclusivley doing production of Packard's Hearses and production numbers for 1939 are estimated to be about 1000, The book says the cars from this period (37-53) are considered the highest quality and most desirable to collecors. they also made ambulances and limo's for packard.

Here is a picture of my friend Anthony's 38 Packard hearse that he did for a customer to be used as limo and then the company came into hard times. It is for sale with a modern drive train. It is a great car.

  17. I think what this means is that Henney was exclusively using Packard chassis to build professional cars , and not that all of the '39 Packard hearses were made by Henney. I did find some references to other companies using Packard chassis in that timeframe. Splitting hairs, I know, but it might make a difference in terms of finding parts. :)

Keep in mind that this car is over 70 years old and made by a car company that went out of business over 50 years ago. The Hearse is a custom car with a specialized frame and suspension.

Here are a couple pics I found, one a project car and one an ad for the 1939 Packard Service Car (Hearse) made by Henney...

The one on the right is the one I am picking up. I am hoping it looks like the one on the left when I am done.

There were some cautions in other threads about lifting long service cars similar to this type. The comments had to due with frame strength. It might be important to figure out just exactly how to lift it, for safety of the car but mainly of you!

I know my friend Anthony boxed the frame and added crossbracing. He mention the frame flexed due to it length and use of rivets. He said once it was stucturally sound it handled a 100% better. Joe
