Welcome to the HAMB! Great photo, post it on the Auto Racing 1894-1944 thread were more Race Car guys will see it. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=380814&highlight=racing+1894+1944 The Search box on the right side of the bar will be a big help finding related posts. My guess is that the car is from the 1925-30 era, there looks to be an odd lever in the top of the cowl, wonder what that controlled. Post more photos if you have them. Bob

That's a great photo and there is probably a similar one with the whole car in it somewhere. I'd also say late 20's early 30's as to the year.

Knowing what area he lived and possibly raced in might help narrow it down too. There are a lot of old race car photos floating around from all forms of racing and usually a number of them from open wheel racing in that time period.

It's a good intro post I'd leave it here, just repost it in the racing 1984-1944 thread.

Look @ how close he sits to the steering wheel....Not a lot of room in that cockpit.
Could that be the hand clutch ?? Or maybe the in and out box shifter ??
Whatever it is, looks like the lever travels in a straight line..

The car looks like a Model T based build, that lever may be for the two speed Ruckstell rear that some cars used, just Hi and Low, so there wildn't be a lot of shifting while racing. That is such a cool photo you should use it for your avitar!
