i am new to hamb and hemi's . i need to know what is the best trans to bolt to my 354 hemi. are there any good trans that bolt up directly . are what do you have to have to bolt them up . your help will be appreciated. ive looked in the older post and have seen somelike 727 but dont know what they had to do to bolt them up . i have a 72 newport with the 400 i could rob the tranny from it or get a new one. i have a 350 chevy but want to keep it all chrysler.
Depends if you want manual or auto. Manual I recommend a wide ratio muncie. Auto I'd go with the 727. I believe both require an adaptor plate.

The 400 tranny 727 is not the one you want. The baby hemi guys used to use a small block 727. You still have to buy an adapter the only tranny I know of that is a bolt together is an original. Today with the adapters out there the sky is the limit. I personally would lean towards the 727 but you can just about pic and choose.
From the first 727 built to the later '70s early '80s. Anything that a small block came in. Furys, darts, valients, belviders(sp) you name it if mopar put a small block in it it came with a 727. I would start looking at about 65 or 6 up. Avoid anything with a push button tranny.
I have a 727 with home made adpter. I have made it of a 15mm aluminum and a specal inner ring and redrilled flexplate.
Why not use a 518/46RH out of a 92 to 95 V8 Dodge truck. Gives you an overdrive. There is a kit out that allows the od and lockup tc to work. See the following link, down towards the middle of the page. http://www.transmissioncenter.net/727transmission.htm
The 727 in good condition will handle about anything you are going to throw at it. I might want to beef one a bit of I was throwing more than 450 hp or so at it but unless you have really got into your 354 you aren't going to hurt it any.
The adapter works well the car have been used since 2001 and the 727 do it too no issue with non of them.

not necessarily pork. both my '69 satellite and my '72 dart were factory smallblock cars with the 904. i think the 727 was reserved for the hi-po 340 motors.
Also have a look in Chrysler powered RV's for a 727, if there are any in a wrecking yard around your area..... I took mine out of an RV for my drag car.... You may have to swap out the tail section of the SB 727 for a slip yoke.....
try the late sixties thru the early 80's dodge pickups. usually an easy sorce for the small block 727. or the big c-body cars with a small block
I completely forgot they even made a 904 DOH. I had a pair of small block Challengers in the '90s one had a 904 and the other a 727 both were number match 318 cars. I don't know for sure how they decided what to throw in whatever one. I couldn't even tell you today how to tell the difference between the 2. If you remember it might be worth posting.
Also Dodge vans of the 70's with 318s often had 727 trans........ as for an OD automatic, I would probably use a GM 700R4 or 2004R simply because they are much less bulky in size than the Mopars......and the the Mopar/GM adapter is readily available. When shopping for the adapter check out www.transmissionadapters.com , it's Bendtsens in MN and they also make very good stuff. As indicated by prior poster, Wilcap also makes very good stuff. I have both brands and am satisfied with each. Ray
