This is an American style '37 Ford. This one was built in the U.K. so it has right hand drive and one or two other differences, but it still has the 221 cu in engine

Roller skating was a big event in the 1960's for dates, meeting people and a place for the "JD's (juvenile delinquents)" to hang out with their "hot rods". I knew no good would come of it.
Skating to Andy Williams' "Moon River" capped off most events. During the week was open to anyone but Saturdays were for couples.

The Baird Griffin (see post #19150) was fitted with a Maserati engine - another of Bobbie Baird's cars, the Emeryson was fitted with a straight eight Duesenberg engine.

I'm not sure how you can definitively say
this a '55. The '55 Chevy V8s were, as far
I know, other than by casting numbers,
indistinguishable from '56's. '57 and newer
blocks are easy to spot because the '57 283's
(but not 265's) had a pad for an oil filter added
to the casting, the '58 's had provisions for 'side
mounts' cast in, and the '59 and newer engines
did away with the staggered bolt pattern on the
    valve covers.

Right on, SixDogs! Rollerskates (not in-lines) and skating represent one of the iconic, emblematic images of the '50s and at least earlier '60s. 'Rods, duck's-ass hair, poodle skirts & saddleshoes, leather jackets, trad Rock&Roll ... many of the trappings of the times virtually disappeared in the later '60s era of Beatlemania, anti-war, etc. The HAMB is largely about keeping a dream and an old way of doing things alive.

FarmerGal, sure shows that TRAD AIN'T BAD! Not at all.
Not to sound political, but if people in general embraced
tradition a bit more, they'd realize that MUCH of value
happened in the past -- music, ideas, architecture. Sure,
some old stuff wears out and NEEDS to go, but there's
a lot worth holding onto and even treasuring, car/trucks
included. I WONDER if this Connecticut McDonald's is
    a francisee or company-owned (?).

That particular Deuce is one of my all-time
absolute favourite cars, ever. Does anybody
have any more details on it? Who built it,
technical details & specs, etc - and what
eventually became of the car? Does it still
    exist today?

It was started by the Alexander Brothers and further modified by George Barris for Clarence Catallo. It's still around, his son Curt owns it now, I saw it in Daytona about ten years ago, it's a bit over the top but it's an icon.

Saddle shoes were THE item for girls in the 1950's and early 1960's. Every girl had them and had to have "bobby socks" as well. They were just white socks folded down. Notice the hand-sewn hem of her skirt since economy prevailed.

The second photo shows saddle shoes and bobby sox worn by early telephone company workers, probably at AT&T. Most all were young girls that worked a split shift of AM and late afternoon or early evening. My sister did because it paid well plus I figured they listened in as well. Some just worked directory assistance calls.

If a girl rode in a hot rod, she was almost certainly wearing bobby sox.

  15. It may be an Icon..but I always questioned the appropriateness of it's use on that Beachboys album cover.
    No "Flathead Mill".
And does it have the "Lakepipes" ?
Guess the record marketing gurus didn't care much about accuracy .

Johnny99: Sing along now. "Anne Francis stars in Forbidden Planet"

Jimi: Two decades before her "Forbidden Planet" role
was further immortalized by a tongue-in-cheek song lyric
in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," Anne Francis was
an established movie star, seemingly never lacking for
starring or supporting roles. Here are two early ones,
    both featuring CARS!

The hyped movie was 1953. What year's the Merc, also '53?
Below, Glen Ford saves Anne from a speeding Chevy in '55's
"The Blackboard Jungle." Both these pix are for sale on eBay,
if an Anne Francis fan would like to add them to the garage
    or den wall.

If my memory is correct (and at my age?), the pad in the block casting for oil filter started with 1956 265 Chevy. The 1955 265 was unique/one- year, with external-mounted oil filter on top of intake manifold as an option.

  22. Dated April 19, 1957 Chevrolet published the 24 page "1957 CHEVROLET STOCK CAR COMPETITION GUIDE" that listed all the part numbers and suggested modifications to build your own Black Widow race car. The 6 lug hub, drums and wheels needed are listed in there, along with a truck style 6 lug rear axle that was made to be a direct bolt in replacement for the original car rear end. To say that you would just slap truck hubs on the original spindles would be an over simplification, since stronger steering knuckles, wheel hubs and brake drums were usually replaced at the same time, for greater durability, as the guide so aptly puts it. No doubt there were some local racers that adapted whatever they had at hand to build a car that would take the same abuse however.

I've had '57 265's with no cast in oil filter
boss and with the optional top-mounted
    by-pass filter.

I've been told that the guy running in the photo is Junior after being thrown out of the car.

Also, no better thread than this one. Keep it going, including the diversity. That's one of the things that makes it so cool. (JMO)
