Ford 7.5 and 8.7 diff cover dimensions

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by blackjack, Jan 4, 2011.

  1. Anybody got a cover or a gasket handy for either of these rear ends? I'd be grateful if you could give me bolt centre to bolt centre measurements - none of these items lying around in English scrapyards for me to look at!!!!

Ford 7.5 I am familiar with, 8.7 I am not. I have some 8.8 diffs. Would that be what you are talking about?

the number is the ring gear diameter, so I'm betting the inside of the gasket would be about 7.5" tall on the small one, and about 8.8" tall on the big one.

  4. The 7.5" is slightly rounded on the sides (up and Down) while the 8.8 is straight. The 7.5" cover measures 9.3/4" wide while the 8.8 is 11"

This might be helpful. I don't know any dimensions other than what's shown here.

Are you looking for 8.8 or a 8.7 rear cover. 8.7 measures
3 3/8 center to center on gasket holes. Uses a 8.7 ring gear not a 8.8. Also bolt holes are spaced differently(10 bolt) Were used in late 70's early 80's has a tag with WER on it. Most were 2-47-1 ratio. Victor gasket # p18561
    126-2005.

  8. The WER type integral housing is described as 'an integral type housing, hypoid design, with the centerline of the pinion set below the centerline of the ring gear. Semi-floating axle shafts are retained in the housing by "C" locks at the splined end of the axle shaft'.

The WER type rear axles listed below were used in Ford, Mercury, Granada and Monarch and had an 8.7" ring gear. All were 2.47 gears

In 1975 the axle codes were:
    3.07:1 - WER-S, WER-P and WER-T

In 1976 the axle codes were:
    2.75:1 - WER-V and WER-W
    3.07:1 - WER-P, WER-S and WER-T
    3.25:1 - WER-V

In 1977 and 1978 the axle codes were:
    2.47:1 - WER-AA, WER-AB and WER-AC

By 79 they had been replaced by the 8.8
