Hello, I have purchased a 1948 Chevrolet truck. It is what I believe to be a 3/4 ton because it has 8-lug wheels on it. It has no bed on it. Does all this Info mean it is a long bed truck only or could it have come factory with a shortbed too? I have measured the best I can come up with it somewhere around 124" inches from the center of the front wheel to the center of the back wheel. It still has the 6 cylinder engine in it with the 4-speed trans. Would that engine be a 216 or a 235? I am not familiar with these trucks so any Info about this would be appreciated. I am hunting for a bed for it but do not know what size to get. Long or Short? Thanks for the Info in advance!
Wheelbase should be 125.25". All 3/4 tons had the same wheelbase and the same length bed. Original engine would be a 216.
As stated in the first post about the truck, the truck has no bed on it. Does this mean that it is a long bed that is suppose to be on it? Thanks for all the info!
Engine is 216 unless it's been changed. Hood trim still there ? 3600 is 3/4 ton, 3800 - 1 ton. Serial # will have FR for 3/4, FS for 1 ton. If you find a box on a GMC, make sure the fender will end up in the right place.
Thanks for the Info. No hood trim. It has been removed over the years I guess. I can see where it was supposed to be though and I am sure it has the original engine. So a 216 it is then. It does that the Day and Night rearview mirror and cigarette lighter. Anything else you could tell me about it is appreciated. I would still like to know if it supposed to be a short or long bed truck or not.
If it's a 3/4 ton it's most likely a longbed with a wheelbase of 125.25". Original engine was a 216, but many have been upgraded to a full-pressure 235. A 4-bolt valve cover indicates a 235, a 216 will have two center bolts holding it on. Here's a link: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/1947-1955-chevrolet-trucks1.htm
