any one out there know if these have the same 9in that ford ranchero's and wagons had? is the bolt pattern the same as ford??? i have one destroyed brake drum (previous owner must have been deaf cause the brake came apart and chunks of the retainers were wedged between the shoe and the drum), and i need to find two replacements. reason stands that the villager and the ranch wagon were basically the same damn car, and the frame is the same, then the rear would be the same. BUT, i have confusing information saying that some mercury parts were used and the car may have the larger mercury bolt pattern. can anyone clear this fog?
the difference in lug pattern being something like mercury being 5 on 5 and ford 5 on 4.5... i know none of this and am not close to the car so i cannot go measure for my self.
oh hah that's what I was going to say, just measure. My 2 cents , I wouldn't trust any book, who knows what's been done to that rear/axles in 53 years. whatever it is, though, you can be sure it'll be expensive just switch to rear discs like I did, you know, to save money! pffft. ;-)
actually that was part of my reasoning for using rear discs, only $85 complete from a junknyard vs 80 or 90/drum for my 8" ford plus shoes/cyls/hoses. I understand you can use a ranger drum or something for it for cheaper, but the 96 crown vic disks are what I used. It was probably a wash money wise, but I learned a lot in the process.
I have a 58 Edsel rear in my 39 Chevy, it is a 9 inch with 5 on 5 bolt pattern. Also has a huge pinion seal that took some work to find.
ALL 1959 Edsels use a 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern, the "big pattern" Edsels were only made in 1958, there were no Mercury based Edsels in '59. Rear drums should be the same as '59 Ford wagon/Ranchero.
I'm not sure about the T-bird stuff, but all full size '59 Ford cars had the same style rear end as your Edsel. Should be pretty to find the Ford replacement stuff. There's no such thing as an Edsel specific rear end.
Edsel wagon rears were all 4.5 pattern. The only Edsels with the 5.0 bolt circle were the '58 Citations and I think the Corsair too. They were the big cars built on the Merc Chassis.
57 thru 59 ford nine inch small axle bearing axle rear ends are interchangable with 64 1/2 thru 66 mustangs 8 inch on axles and brakes and the same for 5 lug mavericks
Let me add that they are not the same drum and hardware, but you can change everything over to easier to find parts and the 8 inch axles are actually a little thicker in the midsection as the 57 thru 59 taper down then back up again at the spline
