I don't know what this rear is out of, it has the casting date on it and it says GM. I forget the date exactly but it was made in 1962. could someone tell me what kind of rear this is please?

I was thinking chevy because the Olds/Pont were real round looking....but I don't know when they went to an oval shape?

Since it still has axles in it, check the lug stud centers-Olds & Pontiac were 5 on 5, Chevy 5 on 4 3/4.

I didn't take a pic of the numbers because I have them wrote down somewhere but I can't find them,
I zoomed in and it looks like 1|7|(2/3)|*|8|3|(8/3/6)
    | seperates digits, slashes in parenthesis is possible numbers, when I get a chance to see the numbers again I will get them exact(the truck is a half hour away)

would a pic of the bottom of the dropout help anyone identify this?

    thanks everyone for your input

    How did you measure it?

  18. Did you measure from the center of one stud and then to long side of stud that is two away? Measure this way and it gives close to correct for a 5 lug pattern. Being GM it is not 5 on 4.5 pattern unless omeone changed the pattern, but that should be obvious looking at the drums and axles.

My suspicion on your rearend with pics you have is a 62 Chevy rearend, as used on 55-64 Chevy cars. The fill plug on the back looks Chevy to me.

Definitely a 55-64 full size rear end; also used in mid fifties to mid 60's Corvettes, and 62-65 Chevy II/Nova's. Same question about why the ring gear shield. Butch/56sedandelivery.

Agreed, 55 thru 64 chevy car. I would say the houseing is tri five, because that panhard arm is homemade and there are no mounting points for upper arm for 58 thru 64s.

oh I measured from center to center i did it the wrong way then, I guess they are probably half inch studs so it would be 4.75, with that and what most of you are saying I have to agree its probably a chevy rear, as for the reinforcement on the back I dont know why it is on it, it has been like that for nearly 45 years now, it was supposedly raced in the 60's

its definately a 55-64 chevy unit with a panhart bar bracket welded on [and i dont know why a ring gear shield welded on as these rears broke axels, spyders or on a posi broke bearing caps] great street stuff with an auto. not so much for a stick and not for slicks[ as it is not a P case and wont last under abuse] trust me i have been there
