1958 f100..... I later learned to appreciate brakes & steering

  5. In a 1950 light blue Plymouth flat head 6, three on the tree with something called a Fluid Clutch. You could drive it like a stick or you could leave the clutch out let it shift itself and even brake and stop with the clutch out. No wonder I'm so screwed up. The car was 8 years old and I was 10.

Dad had me running the Cub Cadet when I was 8, by 10 I was on the Farmall M, by 11 I was driving the farm roads in the '75 Dodge Club Cab Long Bed w/ 440 V8. Dad got suspicious when he noticed all the stuff in his tool box was slung over to one side, so he told me to quit doing fish-tails on the gravel roads. Driver's Ed was taught by the HS principal in the summers, so when I was 15 I got grouped with two cheerleaders (the cute but annoying ones). On more than one occasion, my driving circuit would be to get on the highway so he could take a nap, and the girls' eyes would get as big as softballs when I would draft a semi doing 70 in a 65 as Ol' Coach would be sawing logs in the co-pilot's seat...good times

(1962) Our family "kids car" a 1955 Plymouth Plaza, 6, stick and my Grandfathers 1951 Chrysler.

Grandfather more or less believed that if a car would go 90mph you were supposed to drive it that fast as often as possible.

Guess who gave the more fun driving lessons!

Well the first thing was a Ford 9N Tractor when I was 12, then a 1921 Ford Model T that was in a friends Dads garage. The engine was frozen he said if we got it running we could drive it.
Alot of WD-40 a propane torch, rear wheel off the ground to rock it back and forth with, head off, a hammer and 2x4 to smack on the piston tops and the engine unstuck. (Cast iron pistons don't stick to the cylinder walls like aluminum ones do)
Fresh gas and oil. We got it fired on the magneto and off we went.
I had watched my Dad drive his Model T so we had the basics down.
When his Dad got home from work we were driving it around the neighborhood.

first car I drove was a 1963 Ford Econoline Pickup. 170 and a 3 speed toploader. Very fun to drive in the streets of Fort Collins, CO.

  19. I learned to Cruise in my 54 Buick Special, how to do crazy donuts in a 442 W30, then learned how to "properly shift" and drag race in a 69 Z28, and then Drive really fast on snaking roads in a Boxster. But the most important thing I learned was how to fix my Buick, because pedaling a bicycle gets old.

1950 something Nash Metropolitan. Remember the linkage always getting stuck and I would take a big screwdirver to separate the shift arms.

Funny you should ask. It's the very 1949 Dodge Coronet, Flathead 6, with fluid drive, that I'm now looking to "freshen up". We have an oldie that is running & complete. Needs a little body work, primer & paint, upholstery, and then some...

I was looking for parts sources for 40's vintage when I stumbled across this thread.

I think I've seen a few good parts sources listed here, but didn't write them down or bookmark them. My search efforts have been in vain thus far. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

In the mean time, I'll keep looking, I know I saw something somewhere.

Farmall M, narrow front. Options, sickle mower with a dump rake on the back-oh and a farmhand loader on the front. The rule was pick up every bit of hay you cut and don't drop the tractor in the ravine. Trick was the sickle mower stuck out from the side of the tractor about 4' more than the rake did.

Dad's 1957 Ford Custom 300 two door post,... It was red and white with a gray interior, A 223 Six with a Ford-o-matic transmission. And Grandpa's 1951 Pontiac 4 dr. post. straight 8, 3 on the tree.

    These arn't them,... but close

The 57' looked just like this without the skirts,..

56 Belair with 235 and 3 speed and also a 59 Apache, 235 4 speed. The very first car I drove was a 1950 Jeep. Not really driving, just steering while my dad fed cows out of the back. I was 3. I could drive the 56 and 59 by myself by the time I was 6.

An early '70's F100. I was a small kid, and getting the clutch down, steering and using the floor shift (4 spd manual) I was all over the shop! That was a long gear stick!!

  29. I learned to drive in a 1960 Chevy Brookwood wagon. 235 and 3 on the tree.

When I was 13 I worked summers on my uncle's farm and he had an old International panel truck. I ended up buying it from him as a project and by the end of summer I taught myself how to drive it around the farm. Used to go out and drive it around every couple weeks until I was old enough to get a permit and bring it home! That was a long two years!
