You could take that Ugly Mayflower, dump it in TJ with the keys left in the ignition, go back in a month and find the car back on the U.S. side, intact, with a note saying: "Keep that ugly thing out of our neighborhood!"

My dad and I used to play this game all the time (man I miss him).

In '56, I think it would probably be the Plymouth, and I'd be waiting with bated breath to buy an over-the-counter 413 in a few years and build a sleeper. As a time traveler, I'd probably stash away a dual-quad, stick-shift '56 Bel Air convertible for resale.

It's even more fun if you move up into the "popular" price range (B.O.P., Dodge/DeSoto, Mercury, Hudson, Nash, Studebaker, etc.), because the possibilities open up quite a bit.

And then, if you think about what a used car lot would look like in 1956...

I liked the looks of all the '56 models, but I'm partial to Plymouths. My dad's '56 4-door was the first new car I got to drive, and a basket case '56 Belvedere 2-door hardtop is my latest project.

  8. Ha ha. No shit.

  9. Kinda partial to my 56 Chevy 210 2 dr hdtp. Some day I need to get to building it as I tore it down and shoved it in the garage way back in 94. Damn father time has been in fast forward mode

Back in the day (1966) my Dad gave me the ten year old Plymouth and I drove it to High School. I hated being poor, I really wanted a Chevy like all the other cool guys, not a stupid Plymouth. Fast forward 45-years, I'm now restoring three 56 Plymouth convertibles and wouldn't have a Chevy.

I like 'em all, but for me, it's gotta be the Ford.

  16. Well, In 1956 the American public said FORD, buying 1,391,874 to Chevy's 1,338,106.
Plymouth 705,455 - not even in the game.

Ford beat them even more in 57

    And in 56 Ford sold 15,631 T-Birds to Chevy's 3,467 Corvettes!

5,6,7 chevs are like belly buttons, everyone's got one.

I spent too many years working in restoration and body shops restoring every bodies 5,6,7 chevs.
Often I would get 3 or 4 57's to do in a row which made for a boring year. The second most over restored cars I think are 67up camaros. boring boring boring.

For 56, I gotta go with the Ford, I'm digging the look with the factory fender skirts.

56 Chevy's have always been my favorite tri fives ever since I was a little kid in the late 70's early 80's. They will always be my favorite car!

I would buy a 56 Chevy. Mine is a BelAir, but I would have bought a 210 instead....With a dual quad 265 and a 3 speed. Here's a couple of pics of my 56 2 door sedan. It was sold new in Anchorage Alaska, and somehow ended up in Pekin Illinois, in the late 1970's.

  21. I think I would choose the Ford. This is my second 56 2 door Fairlane Victoria.

I learned to drive in a 56 Belair 4 door, great cars but for style, I'd take a 56 Ford Vic.
None of them turn my crank with 4 doors tho.

Back in 1963 my Mom was getting ready to buy a new Galaxie convertible. She offered to give me her '56 Customline, 2-door sedan rather than trade it in to the dealer. I turned it down 'cause I had just bought a '54 Chevy.

I still regret not getting that car.

    I've had a '56 Chevy, I'd much rather have a '56 Ford today! :D

  27. I like em all, but the Ford's best, since I had one

In 56 cars it's a Ford but may be biased as got one now but have had all the tri five Chevys before. Dice are gone on this one, they came with it.
