My dad tells me stories of watching Dale clobber everyone in a '55 Chev with a 'stock' 409 at the local (Calgary Alberta) track before he made the move to Cali

  2. Garlits used the mirrors too. The idea was to see if the tires were smoking, according to Big Daddy.

If you started out driving front motor dragsters the transition was tough at times--never drove much with the motor behind me but I like having it out front where I can see what is going on, likewise the tires.

Great shot of the "Canuck" Dale Armstrong is one of most talented and nicest guys around. I remember when Dale teamed up with Frank Pedregon in the 66 nova. Pedregon installed a hemi in the nova. One night in 66 or 67, the hemi puked #7 rod. No problem says Frank, remove piston, rod rocker arm and push rod, drain the water and make a run. They won the round. Drag racing would not be the same without Dale's innovations and skills. If you see him at a track, stop and talk with him about the old days in So Cal.

Doug was in that location when I met him in 1963. The shop was on Whittier Boulevard just east of Goodrich in East L.A. I worked farther east on Whittier Boulevard a couple of miles. It was always a treat to drive over there after work to see whose car he would be working on. I watched Hubert Platt in his injected Falcon doing dry hops in Doug's lot after they finished up a set of headers. I watched Doug doing short blasts across the same lot in his Chevy II Much Nova a few months later. Pete Everett owned a Chevron gas station on Goodrich (as I recall) and I watched his '62 Plymouth gradually change from a Super Stocker into an injected Hemi "Half-Breed" and then into a topless funny car over a period of a few months. Those were good times!

Could almost swear I saw this car, with the same paint, featured in Car Craft mag as a "street freak".

I think the front wheels on "Skootin' Cuda" are Keystone Classics. Back then the Classic was all chrome, the Kustomag Classic had black trim on the spokes, the way most folks identify them. Same wheels Sox and Martin always ran...
Then again, I could be full of crap. Anyone else want to chim in on that?

  18. Not sure that they were Keystone Classics, but I honestly don't know what they are.

  19. Doh! From this angle it says "Rebel Wheels" on the quarter...

  20. Don VanderWoude told me a story about this race: Evidently they were at the hotel pool after the race, and Bovan was getting rather boastful about his win, at least a bit too much for a seven-year-old Donnie. He decided that Steve needed a cool-down and proceeded to push him into the pool, clothes and all!
