120 on my bike (Honda VTX 1800), my 38 Chev would run 105 in 3rd gear at 7 grand, sounded like a chain saw, at least to me and I'd cruised it at 100 coming back from a car show with a friend in a 38 Dodge pickup following me. His son in law was in an Olds and didn't even try to keep up. Alcohol was involved and that was back in the 80's.

145 in a 69' Camaro. there was a ton of road niose, well from the wind. It was that ride that I relized why cars became more aero-dynamic as time went on.

130 in a lime green '70 Roadrunner with a 440 6 pack on Lakewood Blvd. between Spring and Willow through the tunnel under the Long Beach airport runway. The salesman was still hanging onto the seat when I got out and walked away. Decided not to buy the car out of fear of going to jail.

Went 174mph in Gary Ormsby's front-engine digger at Irwindale in 1971. It was over too quick.

The needel bounced a lot, (Bad cable), but on one swing it hit the 110 mark in the 53'.
And i'll be honest, it was down hill and with all the shakes and road noise. I was sure as shit holding on. Not bad for a 50+ year old engine.

F100...nice. Been there in a F/A-18 with 4 wheels :). Always wondered what it would be like to go that fast in something that doesn't leave the ground for more than a few seconds..

Always wondered why you guys had to use a slingshot to get airborne..even with 2 engines. :) Nice bird though. My last was the F-16 but the "Hun" was my favorite. Guess we better stay on thread here.

Was racing my LX 5.0 Mustang against a 308 Ferrari on Hwy 37. Looked down, saw that my speedo was past 140, and nearly shat myself.

yes, most are off 15-20MPH and from the Yamaha dealership i worked for "to make you think youre going that fast" but @200 = 180 thats still flipping fast.
my 92 Honda 600F2 was accurate as i tested it aside a friends car that was correct. got it to 125 then shut down. probably couldve only got another 25 out of it so, yeah most of the stories are fake. also, all bikes made after 98 i think limit at 186... so i was told by the same dealer.

    meanwhile, back on topic...
90MPH in my 63 Mercury Monty 4dr and it wasnt topped out, thought i was doing 60 till i payed attention to the speedometer. [no other cars on the road to get speed limited lol]:D

Got to drive a Tony Stewart clone car at the California Speedway during one of the Richard Petty driving experience sessions. My fastest measured lap was 142. Not very fast comparatively speaking. I found out it's a lot tougher than it looks on TV.

    Short distances is one thing...

143mph average between Rotterdam Netherlands and Paris France door to door. That's average speed over 300+ miles.

And the real answer: Not fast enough.

Bonneville is a whole different place being at a high altitude and on the salt surface. Many newer cars like Vettes ,Vipers and Nazi slot cars have been well documented at near 200 mph in stock condition on paved tracks at near sea level. These are sleek cars with a real 450 plus HP at the drive wheels.Even mundane shit like 4 door V-6 sedans can hit 130 + due to good arodynamics.
But when it comes to older stuff, like Muscle cars, there's little to no proof of top speeds.Magazines like Car and Driver used to list the top speeds of the various Muscle Cars.Back in the day these had well tuned engines to look good in road tests. The highest recorded top speed in a Muscle car sedan was a Hemi Roadrunner at about 150 mph. Most of these cars had acceleration gears and top speed was RPM limited to around 120,figure the gear ratios and do the math. And of course the old cars had terrible areodynamics. This is not to say there weren't some with serious modified HP that could get to silly speeds.

    I have two stories.

1971, 2:00AM on my way home from resetting the alarm at work that had been set off by lightning. Turned down Sample Road in Margate, Fla. headed for Pompano Beach. 7 miles, straight as an arrow two lane blacktop driving my '66 427 Vette. Had a new 454 Chevelle behind and he decided to pass me and I decided he wasn't. About two thirds down this 7 mile road we were both doing 140+ and a set of headlights were coming the other way. The Chevelle was still behind (neither of us had gained much on the other) and we just kept going. The opposing headlights turned out to be a Florida State Trooper. We passed him with my speedo pegged and continued another mile or so to the next red light. The trooper never bothered to turn around cause he knew we would be long gone by that time, and we were. Got to the light and I turned right, the Chevelle turned left and that was it.

Second was at 48000 feet, Mach 1.65 (about 1100 mph) in an F-4D. Did that stuff all the time on functional check flights.

67,200 MPH (estimated) Everyday since I was born.

Oh, that's not what you meant? Then probably about 120 or so in my wife's '64 1/2 Mustang. Around that speed any bump will pick those old pony cars up by their nose, making for a puckered ass and light steering...

Fastest Ive gone was close to 160mph in a built single turbo Supra, had done the cars suspension and on our way back from ButtonWillow going down Lerdo hwy....oh mayn, I have never been stuck in a seat like that before, and the crazy thing was he still had one more gear to go!
The best speed story though was cruising back home from Corona, just had worked out the kinks of my 454 swap in the 65' C10 and had a new Mustang GT pull up on me, its was like 3 in the morning, only two cars out. The Mustang jumped and we were in it, after seeing him go through a couple gears I glance down and my speedo is pegged! We were well over 100mph but he never pulled and my big block was scream'n! finally I let off and the mustang dropped back to me and gave thumbs up...that was a good feeling, first solid race/fun in a old car for me and also something i had built. (with help of hamb member 1gearhead) goodtimes, but those days are far and few now...well I say that now but make it three yards, motherfucker, and we'll have us an automobile race. lol!
