What is it with everybody making offers with no $ lately?

What the heck is going on out there? I know the economy is bad but damn! Has integrity and honesty gone out the window too? Last six deals I have thought were done deals have disolved. In each case, somebody makes an offer, I accept, they say they're coming and then call and say they don't have the cash the day they are supposed to show up. WTF? Seems like a huge waste of time to me to even bother with the offer in the first place if you don't have cash. Not only that, but it wastes my time too.

This concept of solidfying a deal when you don't have the cash is new to me. I've had no shows in the past, I've had hem-hawers, I've had dreamers, I've had tire-kickers, I've had window shoppers too.....but going all the way through the deal making process without having funds on hand at the time????? I have only started seeing this start becoming a trend lately within the last few months.....

I hope it dies quickly because it's aggrevating as hell.

Anybody else experiencing this douche-baggery lately?

 

I have seen it for a long time. I got tired of people asking me "will you take $$" and then having NO money to even back it up with.

I think the people make the deal so they can tell all their buddies what swinging dicks they are, then when they don't show up with the car, they say the douche-bag seller backed out. They get all the glory and imaginary of owning a new car without any of the cash outlay.

 

I had the exact same problem. I my roadster "sold" three times. I finally just traded.

 

If there borrowing the money,.. and have been used to that practice,... the bankers are holding on with both fists !,.. Home equity and all those loans are really tight now.

I keep getting offers for trades,... after they come to look at the car, with the Ad in there hand that says, "Absolutely NO TRADES !"

Just take a deep breath,.. relax,... And wonder if they were just casing your place, so they can rob you, and sell it all as scrap. Makes me feel a whole lot better,...

Trannyman makes a valid point. I used to manufacture Custom van accessories in Houston in the 70's . I'd spend all day preparing estamites for a deal I thought was solid only to see it dissolve a few days later . Years later , I got to restoring older cars with the same results ........... scrubba

 

it gets back to no money no deal the bankers have turned into pieces of s---. like the stock brokers it will get worse before it gets better.the bankers and stock brokers are whores at least with the whores you knew what your getting. i like the latter better. my 2 cents. happy turkey

 

This is the reason I take paypal... when it's paid it's done deal not when they say they want it!!

Yea they take a fee, but it's well worth it to me because it's instant! and I can turn around and purchase something from someone else!

Jon, it's becoming a pretty silly game, huh?...I asked for my adds to be closed, in fact.

I was spending 2 to 3 hours a day "working" for nothing...no follow through on just about anything.
I quit...I'm just going to keep my junk...

I think it is hard for some people, who, as stated above, previously had buying power, to now accept their present situation...figuring they will scrape it up, or whatever, because the deal seems sweet, and then, again, if they are borrowing money for stuff...well, it must have become a lot harder than previously.

I can only assume on that one, 'cuz I haven't asked for a loan in a long time...another lesson I learned.
It's why I only have a bunch of unfinished junk, but it's MY junk.

For now, I'm just done with selling.

 

After buying and selling over 300 cars since 1976, I think my 54 chevy kustom wagon is the last car deal for me. It is getting harder to make a few bucks in what we call the free enterprise system. And dealing with scammers and flakes drives you out of the hobby.

People now days want you to give them what you have and since the Internet came along everyone is an expert on cars. That's why I'll just keep on striping for a living...not just anyone can do it, I stripe your car, you pay me and we be happy.

I made a deal with a Hamber,who will remain un-named and we went back and forth for several days.

He had a friend that was familiar with the type of car and I spent a while talking to him also,,he relied on this guy to help him with all the questions
and we finally agreed on a price

After we agreed on a date he was supposed to arrive,,I received another call call saying he had found something,,same type of car and probably less expensive.

I can't fault a guy for that,,and the car really wasn't for sale,,he had just sent me a PM asking had I ever considered selling,,so no real harm. HRP

 

Just had this happen to me yesterday.

Supposed buyer had seen my truck at Good Guys event, and tells me he wants to examine it further and go for a ride.
Spends 45 minutes at my house and ride, offers me 24K, but then tells me he's been having some trouble with his credit union, and is not sure he can get the money. Why offer then?

Last week, another person wanted me to float him a loan for two years at $1,000/month. Ahhhh nooooooo.

 

I totally agree, I see this trend as well I have had three guys that made offers on my truck, I accepted them and then they proceeded to string it along for up to 2 weeks under the guise of "making the arrangments" shipping etc. and then back out at the last minute or totally down grade the offer. I wouldn't blame the banks for tightening up the purse strings, I think its pretty obvious that they were over lending as it was, When they will lend you 125% of what your house is worth just to buy toys?Sorry for the rant, but why someone would make an offer that they can't follow through on I guess it just comes down to the wannabe syndrome coupled with a lack of integrity, same as most things these days

 

I don't think it's changed at all ... to me it's the same as it was before (if you are selling locally i.e. Buy & Sell Newspaper, Kijiji, Craiglist). I had an item on Kijiji couple months back. Get a call, they want it, but need dimensions so they can arrange for a vehicle or a trailer. Three weeks later I still haven't heard from them, but I do get another nibble from someone else. The question this time is "will I deliver if they buy it" (these newcomers are within 10 miles of me, the first people were over 100 miles away). I answer "sure, you come and look at it, pay for it, and I will follow you home with the part". Never heard back from buyer number 1, never heard back from buyer number 2 so I pulled the ad and pushed the part back out behind the shed.

I hear a lot of comments on this site regarding eBay being referred to as eGay and ePay etc but I have only once had an issue with a non-payer on that site.

I have always found the local methods of selling to generally be a pain in the ass. Too many no shows and stupid phone calls (selling a '70-'81 Camaro rear spoiler once, some moron phones and ask if it will fit a Mustang).

 

Its a different market now. Lots of lookers and BS artists, very little cash.

 

I think it HAS certainly changed...man, it used to be sure-fire, on here, list it = sell it.
I can't give stuff away, now...

And forget shipping...hell, I've gotten 4 thousand shipping quotes for folks lately, and I'll tell you what, there is NO WAY I would have paid them, because they were absolutely outrageous, but additionally, it has started to seem like people have been developing kind of crazy new ( and very, VERY unrealistic ) expectations of what even used to be a reasonable shipping expense.

"Hey, I'll take that 80 lb. pile of steel you got there, if you can ship it to Ecuador for $7.00"

I give up...back to pack ratting...

 

I too have seen this plenty. From tractors to hot rods there isn't the money out there any more and from what i've seen people are making offers for sport to entertain themselves. It is very frustrating.

 

I had a guy that I knew from a friend tell me he was going to buy my Mustang face to face once only to disappear when it came time to do the deal. After talking to another friend, the same guy did the same thing to him once before. What was even worse was that I had already made a deal on another car with the money I planned on getting from the sale.

 

I have been trying to sell a running, driving 1957 Chevy 150 2 door with a 327 and 4 speed. I am only asking 14k , it is very solid with much done to it. I have had several back out and 3 people offer 2400 for it saying I was asking too much. I told them I would crush it first and then as politely as possible escorted them off my property. It is frustrating and if I could keep the '57 I would at this point.

 

seems to be a lot of people want you to email them pictures . you email them and never hear from them again. you would think that they could at least email you back and say thanks but i guess that is a sign of the times to.

 

It works both ways too.

I responded to an ad in the HAMB classified section a few weeks ago, asked if he still had the part after no action in the ad for a month, he said yes, I asked how much to ship...no answer. PM'ed again, still no answer. Third time, no answer.

Buy it if you want to buy it, sell it if it's for sale, answer your PM's so you don't leave people hanging.

This is nothing new though, I saw this exact same thing all through the 80's.

 

Its the credit card generation... I give you a piece of plastic and worry about paying for it later.. Cash up front is a whole new concept for these people. If you look in their wallets they may have a couple of bucks in cash and 5+ credit cards ..probably ALL maxed out...

 

I have had just the opposite happen. Have the cash, made the deal, then wired the full payment for the car...only to find out the idiot sold the car to someone else for more money! Then I had to beg the idiot to wire my money back. I hate eSlay. Vehicle protection offered no protection.

 

From a buyers stand point, things just keep changing here at home. We decided to try to have out first kid. She is 40 and me 42. No kids yet. You should see the cost of this. OUCH!!!! That put a change in the buying of the car/truck.

The only good thing is....I have the engine at the shop. Still have the cash to start it.

There have been a couple cars/truck that I called on or emailed. I just had to drop out for the time being.

I need to sell some past hobbies too. Stuff is just laying around collecting dust. If I did this, I could buy a car.

I will just ask tons of question for now and leave the tire kicking to others.

Well,there you go......buyer # 1 makes a deal with #2 to buy his widget (all depending on IF he sells his widget,but he doesn't reveal that) so #2 goes,"oh boy" and talks to # 3 about buying his widget and a deal is struck.....but Damn...'unknown' doesn't buy #1's widget and the whole house of cards falls down...pissing everyone off...in reality no one had any $$$ just the desire to have something different......Been happening in the housing market for years

 

I think you had the '57 283 / pg for sale a while back in the classified section , I am interested , but , you said you couldnt post pics , and I said I didnt want to drive from southern WV to go on just a add placed on classified section , if you will , take some pics , send them to me , tell me a little more about the motor / trans (like is it locked up , siezed , weathered , in dry storage , etc.) , and I thought your price was reasonable , I would pay your price , just lookin for a little more info before I make a 6 hour ride , hell, I'll even post my phone number (304)920-8850 , that's all.

I have put items for sale online some buyers showup to buy if i will pay for their gas or write them a check to take to take the item. I quit trying. I have collected 40 years of cars & parts i will sell for scrap before giving it away. The rest wont even call and say they NOT showing up.

 

My Dad used to call them "Tire Kickers". Want something for nothing and usually won't buy it when the deal is made.

 

I haven't had a big problem selling stuff, I'm having trouble getting rid of it!

I've sold (read: already been paid) for some stuff and a car, and the guy hasn't gotten around to coming to get it.
