I had a friend that wanted to test drive a new T-Bird back in the 60's. Yes we had a freeway back then and he took it up to 130. The salesman was a little nervous and said he didn't think they would do that. Telephone polls looked like fence poles. But the best ride was in a SBC 4 speed powered Deuce 5 window through the quarter at 125. That ride got me to thinking about hot rods and 2 months later I bought my 40 coupe. 45 years later and I still have the bug.

My 77' Trans Am saw 155mph pretty regularly. Spun a 360 coming off the interstate after racing a camaro, ended up on the front lawn of a rest area. Even sliding sideways at 100+ mph that car didn't even think about flipping over...awesome car.

05 BMW M3=165, 95 gt mustang 150+ 5th gear 4600rpm., the new cars are built for that and handle great. the one that almost made me cry was pass. seat of a 550hp cobra 5th gear wrapped out. dont know how fast we were going just that I couldnt pick my head up and I wanted out. LOL

I have video from inside the BMW ill post up when i get off work.

  6. Fastest and quickest was 9.98 at 147mph in a '67 dodge dart GT with a well built 440 under the hood and nothing that would make it street legal, straight line only car. My top speed in a daily driver was in a '59 El camino with a transplanted 396/4-speed out of a totaled '66Chevelle.....only about 125 since the back end started getting really squirrely, maybe the those flat fins were catching the wind a little? I dunno.....fun times though.

Many moons ago I was shotgun in a 70 Fury III I had sold to a buddy of mine. I had swapped in a 383 and he did some work on it and added a tunnel ram. as we were coming out of town there was a wide open straight road without any stop signs for at least 3 miles.

He just put his foot in it and the needele kept climbing. He hadn't gotten around to changing the rearend gears yet so we were set for highway speed! The needele went WAY past the 120 mark (if memory serves, it broke) and we were just sailing. It was about this time we remembered that the next busy cross street was coming up in about a mile. They DIDN'T have a stop sign. Eeepp!

He started laying into the brakes. 1970 Plymouth drum brakes. Trying to stop a high speed 1970 Plymouth Fury III Tunaboat! Like out of a freakin' movie we just held on, him standing on the brake pedal, watching the busy 2 lane cross traffic coming up real fast. Those poor old drums had to have been glowing! It literally came to a groaning stop right at the white line. Of course we laughed our asses of at the time, but after we drove off, we pulled over on the other side of the cross street and sat there and took stock. We never did that again.

I'm sorry fellow H.A.M.B.'ers but a good portion of this thread sounds like a giant B.S. session!

181 indicated on the back of a Honda Blackbird. Things happen REALLY quickly at that speed and coming up on cars on the freeway is like they are standing still.

Did it twice. Took it to 150 with the girlfriend on the back and got the crap knocked out of me when we stopped.

Well to get the truth you have to do the math...Just ask how many times each person has told their story, And figure for each time they add 5 MPH Then Subtract That and You will get a more believeable number. And if at anytime they told their story Acohol was involved.....Just forget it You will never get the real answer...LOL

I do drive it on the street a little due to $9.00 p/gal. C-12. Carbs and intake are a piece of crap but there is a lot of work and tuning to get it to a very inconsistant but a low of 9.70. I find that T-350's have the best gearing for the street. I do run M/T Sportsmans on the street but, like my Nova Wagon, run 32" Goodyear slicks at the track. The car weighs 2664 lbs. Did I answer all of your questions?
F.Y.I. I am in talks now with Oddy's Dynotuned Engines in Elma, NY (yes the one Jim Oddy started) to build a Blowen-Injected motor for the car. Its going to be either a Big Block Chevy or an Oldsmobile. You can check them out at http://www.oddysracingengines.com/team.html, and yes I will still drive it on the street.

Unlike a lot of the B.S. on this thread, I don't see the need to fuck around.

Fastest I've ever gone was 140 mph. Had a 94 Plymouth Acclaim that would get up to 130 mph ;) Had the mighty 3.0 V6 which was actually quite powerful. The vehicle I went 140 in was a small shortbox Ranger with a 302 stuffed under the hood. I could have went faster but figured 140 was enough on a public highway.

Custom grind, 13.85:1, Brodix heads and a custom built Hughes converter. But none of this is going to matter if I put the Blower motor in because it'll all have to go. I'm currently looking for an exotic, blow-proof, 700R4 but haven't found anyone that would put it behind a strong blower motor. I'm also talking to a tranny shop about a Ford AOD with a GM bellhousing. My other option is a 36" tall tire with a low gear to keep highway RPM's down, but that will involve a lot of body and chassis changes that I don't want to do.

  27. between 120 -135 in my '63 stingray 327ci........back in the '60's on a crossway between Albany and Schenectady, N.Y.

Clocked at 158 dont know if I have been faster, have been in cars where the speedometer showed faster but we all know how that is, it might be right and it might not be. I have a pretty strong 5.0 mustang right now that I have had going way too fast more than I would like to admit....
