I've wanted another car hauler, ever since I sold my last one, a 1963, a few years ago. When this truck popped up on evilbay, I couldn't help myself.

Plans are for either a BBC, or diesel engine, depending on what I find a deal on first. It already has a two-speed rear end.

I think the '38 will look real good on the back of it!

  3. good luck! You going to save the chassis too? OR put that body on something more late model, that won't ride like a brick with wheels?

I'll leave the stock frame and suspension. I think once the radial tires and steel bed are installed, and it's loaded with a 3500# car, the ride will be all right.

  5. I like it!
You know it was only recently i sold my 72 Chev C-50.
It was rusted out, not worth restoring..
Anyways, I've always liked these kinda things, The old trucks. Kinda reminds me of Duel, Or Jeepers Creepers!

Your'e right the radials will save it. And you just need to go from CO to Wendover. There's some smooth roads out there.
Don't bring it to OH or NJ, or any of the New England states.

One of the supprising things about B'ville was leaving the race car outside all the time. And using the trailer for shade. And leaving the trailer unlocked at night in case a neighbor needed to borrow something before we got there.

I hope to get out there this year with the 608 AA/GL.

  8. That cab is cherry; looks like it came out of "dry" Calif. Well worth saving.....

My vote would be for a Dura-Max, and Allison trans.,keeping it all G.M., although they take up a lot of space with their large heads. Would probably require a mid-engine layout.

Look into a DT 466 or an 8.3 Cummins. Mechanical injection, massive torque, easy to mod.

I'm leaning towards the DT 466. I'm negotiating on one with a 5 speed tranny.

Over do it? In my world, there's no such thing!

I have the engine for you.
    A 2000 5.9 cummins,with a 6 speed 2 overdrive 3060 allison tranny.
    With all electronics.
This is the 24 valve engine.
Its currently in my 1984 dodge crewcab dually pickup, fly in,drive it home.
The engine came out of a wrecked diesel pusher motorhome, its been in my pickup for 2 years.
Everything you need is on the truck, the engine has an air compressor on it because the RV had air ride suspension.
$10,000 buys the truck that has the engine.

does the truck have an engine in it now?

Have you figured the rearend ratio/tire size and what rpm the thing will turn at highway speed in high gear, and how much overdrive you'd want to go down the highway as fast as you want to?

    Neat truck, I'm jealous....

The truck has a running GMC 270, with a 4 speed, 54 mph at 3400rpm. The 270 is governed at 3450, I'm told.

I think any diesel or BB should do the job, IF I can find someone to haul it out here.
So far, there are no takers!

Don't forget to keep the 270 in case you decide you want the Chevy to be fast. OK OK I'm sorry. But I do like GMCs.

I had a buddy back in the 60's that had a '57 GMC carryall for
his tow truck. It came stock with a big Pontiac V8 from GM.
I bet those were offered with Poncho V8's also.
I'm thinking a larger early Pontiac V8 would slide right in!
...just bought one of your shirts...good luck on the salt!!

blackrat40, thanks for supporting FlatCad Racing!

Ponchos are awesome, but I really think I'll go with the Dt 466 diesel.

Stay with me here- Dt 466 diesel.:D

  24. Buddy . . . you goofy bastard . . . now you have your hands in yet another project

I like it - would be cool with a big Diesel, heavy duty trans and maybe some newer running gear (that thing will ride like a beast!).

Anyway - look forward to seeing what you cook up for BVille - it is ALL cool by me!

It is a LOT easier to store tools, spares, fuel etc. in a closed trailer.

    Food for thought,
SV 392, its a medium duty gas motor, you could pick up a running International truck for a couple hundred bucks.

    Nice truck!

I put a DT466 in my Mack truck. It's a good engine but it's pretty big.
They're cheap to rebuild and most models are easy to fuel up if you ever want more power. They're fairly noisy engine compared to most of the smaller diesels so it'll be harder to keep the noise down in the cab.

I don't think the ride will be a problem. The suspension's probably rated for more than you'll carry so you can always pull out a few leafs to soften it up a bit.

  29. Hey i know that yard... i was there fixing my van getting it ready when they were pulling the rotted off box off it.. tell Gerry thanks for the van. also you should go pick up that in person.. that yard is worth a walk through.. lots of cool old stuff...

Umm, I dunno, how about this for a push/test truck? HAhaha!:D

I agree. Dale volunteered to take his enclosed race trailer for just that reason!
