    I'd put in a SBC and make an air cleaner that looked like a can of worms. Ok, just kidding:D

    You won't find anything on this board that will be different for the sake of different. We're all "different" in our own way. There's several Nailheads, Olds, Caddy, early Hemi, and Flatheads here. All of em different than the gratuitous "crate motor" logic. Frankly I think it ought to have anything, ANYTHING, but a small block Ford in it. They weren't even around in the time of the early hotrod and I hear the "Ford in a Ford" cliche more often lately. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. In the end I think your individuality would shine through in how whatever you use is dressed and detailed. I'd advise you don't get so wound up in different that it steals from your gig.

    Now your talking. To take it a step further and put a pair of Corvette valve covers on it and a alluminum intake/4 bbl carb. Anything more will just be showing off.

    Hhhhmmm, if you use what everyone else is using then it won't be different....

    As far as engines go, different could be a Jag 4.0/4.2 DOHC 6, or a NorthStar, or a Toyota 4.7, and that Dodge v-10 can be found in plenty of beat up pickup trucks.

  10. What do you like? What can you afford? Don't use what others want you to use. Put in it what you can work with. I like Y-Block Fords but if you don't know much about engines use an SBC, plenty of support out there for them and their easy to work on.

    I'd say put a Ford in a Ford (I'm running a 289 in my 34). But since you wanted different I would say 331 Chrysler Poly motor, they look cool.

    For just a few more pounds you can get a 478!!

    305A = 738 lbs.
    305B = 771 lbs.
    305C = 840 lbs.
    305E = 795 lbs.
    351 = 860 lbs.
    401 = 880 lbs.
    478 = 925 lbs.

    Torque?
    478 -- 442 @ 1400 rpm
    305 -- 280 @ 1600 rpm
    My 401? 377 @ 1400 rpm

    And those are 1960's GMC numbers, who knows what they really make?

    cid -- bore - stroke
    305 -- 4.25 in. - 3.58 in.
    401-- 4.87 in. - 3.58
    478 -- 5.125 in. - 3.86 in

    Interesting thing is they used the same external block size for all displacements!

    And then there was the "twin-Six" V-12 -- 702 cubes, torque 630 @ 1600-1900, weight = 1485 lbs. :eek:

    I wasn't serious about the 345, that was supposed to be humor :D

  18. How about a 300hp Mercury v8 outboard motor mounted horizontaly! Lightweight aluminum, 2-stroke power but you would have to fabricate a manifold to level out the side draft carbs. This is a pre-fuel injected, pre-4-stroke engine. I always wanted to try this with a front engined hydroplane! Now that's different!

    Just do what a buddy of my dad's did in high school, put a 348 in it with a nasty cam, and TELL everyone it's a 409. Cheap and fun.

    And come on... I had a buddy with a wacked out 345 in his scout, they're heavier than hell, but they are wayyyyyyyyyyy different.

    Or what the hell,go with an Infinity 4.5, it worked for Boyd..........

    Seriously though, I love slant 6's. Not a ton of power stock, but they are damn indestructable. Semi traditional too.

    I cant say I have ever seen one pedal powered before.
    (But I bet Povertyflats has one!!)
    The hard thing about being different here is, as a group we are all very different. Its hard to be a minority in a minority.

    How about going with a not so 'unique' power plant and build your 'uniqueness' into the motor. Nothing clichéd just a different or more agressive intake system?

    Doc.

    You want different? Try a gas turbine..Probably no more than 10 hot rods running them now.
    Here is a pic of a 200 hp Boeing turbine in a 32...700 ft. lb. of torque at stall.
    When you turn the wick up you better be hanging on.
    A 500 hp model will also fit in a 32.
