My definition of a hot rod is a car that looks and preforms better without fenders than with fenders.

There's some beautiful 50's style hot rods in this thread, and I suppose if you put them in their proper time frame, they'd be capable of pretty high performance, relative to other vehicles of the time. I can appreciate 50's styling, but most just don't have the muscle to back up the hot rod namesake. Now (like a few others in this thread have said) take Guy Ruchonnet's 34 Ford coupe. This thing screams hot rod. A blown 392, M/T valve covers, Manning & Brady blower intake, polished Halibrands (spindle mounts and 16x13's), big ol Goodyear slicks, and you've got your self a hot rod. Not only does it have the badditude, it's got the muscle to back it up.

  20. How 'bout a cut up, fenderless 5 window? This is pop's first car in 1956.

I reckon this right here is a hot rod.

well put. some people dont like the evolution of the 'hot rod' but it happened and obviously people on this board will bash anything pre-63 and prefer a 30's ford to anything else. what about the challenger in vanishing point? to me, that was a fucking hot rod. oh wait, it was a muscle car not a hot rod.
