I noticed on my current trip down to your hemisphere that you guys call the engine a donk. What gives? Anyone know the origin? Does it have anything to do with a donkey? Z
Its only been in the last few years that I discovered donk is another name for a 70s or 80s sedan fitted with diamond encrusted 26" wheels and driven by a rapper draped in gold chains. Man, we're so behind the times down here!
A donk has been an engine ever since I can remember, and it was around before then. Why? I have no idea!
Tony's right, but i can remember seeing signs in the back of car windows saying ''dont honk, new donk'' referring to running in a new motor, in old American movies.
Its the sound it makes when you know its in!!! I ve been told it goes back to cart days and the donk-ey was at the front.
Yep I go along with the DONKEY motivator.....The usual I here is "Hey mate pop ya bonnet and give us a look at ya Donk" A
It's been used here for as long as I know...... sounds something that would've originated from Australia to me though.
Yeah,Hellrod,i agree, the word's been round for years, having four letters it must've come out of Aussie....
dude.. heres a little i found ... suggests its australian .. phew that was lucky - as a NZer im quite pleased at this ..... www.abc.net.au/newsradio/txt/s1605561.htm youll need to scroll down a bit
a donkey engine was a small scale steam engine that every shop teacher had to explain turning $ into noise&motion and we all loved the little buggers try buying a good quality steam engine on ebay and see how much competition you get
That will get you a knuckle sandwich at the car shows I go to. So........ does the donkey get jealous when you describe it as having horse power?
haw haw haw, this is hilarious! havent heard anyone under the age of 40 use that term, and havent heard anyone over 40 use it for years.
Just speculating, but I wonder if the use of the word "donk" for an engine could have come the from the term "donkey engine"?? A "donkey engine" is - or was - a ship or shore based - first steam and then later, gasoline or diesel-powered winch or crane engine, used for handling marine cargo. So-called "donkey engines" were also used in the bush by loggers for winching logs and as hoist engines in mines too. Maybe calling an engine a "donk" got started when some inventive and/or desperate person installed an old, cast off, gasoline-powered "donkey engine" in their car or truck???? Been called a donk for as long as I can remember. What sorta donk ya got under the bonnet mate? 192 with triples and a cam was a popular reply. Donk is also the name of the big bugger in Crocodile Dundee. Even Blind Freddy knows that! You know the Walkabout Creek pub (pub from Croc Dundee) is up for sale? There was this drongo on the wireless this morning going on about it. Strewth, 1.2 million dollars. Didn't hear the rest because I was late for work and had to shoot through. Didn't want the boss to think I'm a bludger.
Yeah lots of kids had donkey engines when I was a kid. I haven't seen one of them for a long time. It never occurred to me that anyone wouldn't know that a donk referred to donkey engine.
If you have never been in Australia... be sure to get you slang decoder ring at customs. Those folks have the most entertaining brand of slang you have ever heard. For instance, each size beer has a different name. My favorie, of course, is "Bob's your Uncle." Gary
-------------- 'XXXX beer"??? Hmmm??? Ya' learn something new everyday here on the HAMB! I always thought that "XXXX" referred to really bad porn (or maybe 'really good' porn, depending on your particular point of view and your degree of, and specific favourite type of perversion!)!!! No No No! these are donks! Don't like it, just know from working in air ride. http://www.just-spinner-rims.com/spinner1.html I thought a donk was an Aussie off color name for a gentleman's region. Well it is a motivator of sorts i guess.......
Krikey, that pub is a dump. Then again Wally,s Valiant ute was a real bomb and i believe that fetched a decent amount on Ebay. Now, the Ettamogah pub is much more original than the Walkabout Creek pub.
40 years? Now your just getting carried away there, try 60 years! The XXXX beer is made in Queensland, its shit beer honestly but they couldn't put that on the can so they just put the Xs. I do still hear 'Donk' used occasionally referring to a motor. I always thought it came from the 'Donkey' engine as well? Oh, and Queenslanders have no idea what manners are, how to drive, what indicators are for, I could go on. Doc.
