Local ordinances and local government are the result of democratic processes. If you don't like your local laws you have to either change them by engaging the process or move to a place that has laws more to your liking.

It's a metaphor. Never heard of "airing your dirty laundry" in public? Some people's laundry is never really clean anyway.

The point is that we live in a society, especially when we live close to one another. Neighbors are not free to $hit in their yards, because its bad for everybody else, no matter how badly they need to $hit.

Nobody wants some "code nazi" breaking their balls, but nobody wants their neighbors bringing down property values either.

This isn't communism, socialism, fascism, or some other far-fetched conspiracy to eliminate hot rods from the earth. This isn't the Federal or State government action either. Local ordinances are the result of democratic processes on the local level. If you don't like the ordinances, then run for office or support a candidate of your liking. If you can't change the ordinances, maybe you should move to a place with more friendly ordinances, but be sure to read them before you commit to buy.

Wow, didn't know this was going on. I live in the Paradise Hills area of San Diego, and will definitely be keeping an eye on anyone looking in my garage.

Well it's raining, so I had a little time to answer back, It was'ent a neibor who complained , these guys are googleing your properties, they are overhead shots of everbodys properties, My car buddy was kind enough to let me store my car parts behind some avocado trees, his property is four acres and everone on the block has lots of vintage cars , horses, and live stock, The stuff was hidden from view, and yes some devolpers built some high dollar homes down the street that are not selling. It is no coincidence that five guys in a four block radius get citted, two months before , they hit several neiborhoods close by, that's why I ended up with so much stuff, I was bailing a friend out that had a 20 year collection of parts, one yard we did'nt get to in time , a reefer trailer full of cool vintage engines was scrapped, I can't fight this because I don't own the property and I don't want my friend to get fined. I have been hauling the choice parts to Mexico, a little at a time, There is a pretty nice 1927 model T , two door sedan body that has really good doors, the doors will fit a 28 p,u, also. I think Buck is going to buy the belly tank, and there is a 1956 ford p.u. front clip and parts, the forty front brakes , wishbones and spindles are safe in mexico. their is a really nice model a frame and a 1917 meztler roadster body, their are 50 milk crates full of cool parts and trinkets. any body in the L. A. or San Diego area is wellcome to come this weekend, call me at 619-573-2637. I will solve my problem, but the main reason I posted this is because We are seeing the death of our hobby for future generations. I remember buying my first model A project when I was a kid, it wasent the best one , but it was one I could afford as kid, Every kid should have the right to an affordable project. I remember my dad telling me that old cars are a rich mans hobby, well I proved him wrong, for I have always been able to afford one, and every one else should too. Over the years I have sold lots of bodies to kids , and they have built them and learned themselves a trade. many of my friends have lost their jobs and fallen back on building cars to suport their familys. I will fight back, but once I resolve my problem, several months ago , me and my close friends formed the Traditional Car Club Association, we will be fighting this and the smog laws they keep trying to push on us. Sema saved our ass last year when they tried to make us smog our vintage cars, but they keep trying to keep us off the road so we must help support sema, and all the car club concils and associations.

  7. The answer is always to find the codes, read them, comply with them, and beat them at their own game. If the codes are ambigously written, insist to go to court and make the judge define them specifically, or move away. Sometimes they're not absoloute, which means the prick from codes can hassle you endlessly. And usually you can't sue them for harassment because of it.

magoozi, you sound like a level headed stand up guy. Sorry to hear about your troubles and hope you find good homes for at least most of the stuff you got. Thanks for trying to save as much as you can and passing it down. Sometimes that is just all we can do. Time will bring changes no matter what; some good, some bad, and old cars will just get older and few between.

another thing a friend of mine did is search the county owned yards..... sitting around their own yards were used colverts, old light poles, old stop lights, used signs, ect ect ect... Then went to court and stated the violations by the county on their own laws. They started leaving him alone.

This happens all over, not just CA. I live in WYOMING and we have the same problem up here.

Man, what happened to "land of the free and home of the brave"? You guys are getting screwed by the people whose wages you pay. Sounds like typical council employees trying to justify their salaries by making up new laws.

Over in France, the government are trying to increase the retirement age from 60 to 62, and damn near the whole country has gone on strike as a result. The place has pretty much ground to a halt. Now theres a country who know how to put its government in its place if it steps out of line.

I agree with you, especally with the "not free to $hit in your own yard"... I would not want to live next to someone that did that. Should government regulation stop that? I would hope so.
Back to the point, I guess it depends how much "car stuff" you have around your yard, what the neigbors can see, and how much of a disturbance, in regards to noise working on "car stuff" you make. I would not want my neigbor turning his back yard into a car junk yard, be it old car parts, or new tuner cars and parts everywhere.
There does need to be a balance, and I guess it depends if you live in the city or rural area with large lots. Here were I live, in our neighborhood we got good size lots. The regulation is, only one unlicesed car allowed on your property (not sure about car parts). I have had 2 unlicesed with no problems, the city only cracks down if someone complains. Two neighbors acrross the street work on cars, have boats, etc. We all keep our yards neat, never make much noise. No problems.
I suppose I got it good where I live, and it is about balance and respect for your neighbors, and watching that unrealistic by-laws do not get passed.
    My 2 cents...

Magoozi, I am truly sorry About this. I am honestly seeing a trend here and I hope can all band together and do something about this.

Knowledge is power and we need to put our biases aside and unite for the love of our old cars and trucks.

I hope maybe you guys can throw together a temporary building and form a loophole in this law. They said inside a building right???

What if there is a way to make a " building" think the looks on their faces then!

is this going on because they build new houses close by???

Please let me know, and please take a look at my thread below

Or : Try a little different approach: educate yourself & take responsibility for yourself.
I'm not being harsh or sarcastic. It isn't a quick fix, but a permanent one.
No. I'm not there yet, but am studying as hard & fast as I can.
If it's still there. I should've put it here...
    See: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=523175 , post #4.

I forgot to mention, a friend has done this many years ago & has been helping me learn, & Richard, in 2nd link, has been doing this for ~ 30 yrs...

Hope this isn't perceived as spam, which it isn't. Just offering up some info to help some folks w/their issues. You know who you are... :). Like Brother Dave says: " It's all in the way you look & study in it, dear hearts..." .

I get nothing from this, from anybody, except maybe some grief...

As soon as I can get there... I will.

ACLU? Not likely, not grandiose enough!

They sometimes do good work, but it's almost always about things that grab national headlines.

To be effective these issues will have to be settled locally, by local people.

It all started with 'Home owners organizations', little Hitlers leading the government on. I couldnt believe the power they have, THAT is wrong!

tell them you are athiest and if they want to force you to change the way you keep your property that you will need them to remove any religious artifacts in the state religious freedom has the full backing of the federal government if you complain they will also have to comply start by taking pictures of every religious artifact that you can see and show them how bad it will be for them that should scare them off .the best way to fight the gov is to make them fight themselves its all about the money if you make it cost them lots of money they will back down fast.

What happened to the "no politics" here moderators? There's a bunch of hateful crap posted in this thread that has NOTHING to do with some guy having a yard full of junk.

Being attacked by the politically correct for being a hot rodder and being told not to bring it up would be like just handing your rights out the window. There are a lot of guys on this site who do not have garages and are now getting dumped on because they are back yard mechanics. That was the berth of this hobby that is now being attacked. Its to bad that some on here are part of the attack not helping to stand up for there brothers.
