That K.E.Y car is MIA and the Dunseth 16 is painted as the Cheesman 25.

Sometime back we had a discussion on the meaning of the K-E-Y on Colvins car. Recently I exchanged some e-mails with a nephew of Don/A.J. Shepherd and he informed me that it stood for Kimberly Ellen Young, Colvins daughter (I assume stepdaughter) and she went on to marry Don Shepherd.

I'm a little out of the loop on some things and was wondering if you know whether Don Shepherd is still alive?

Yes he is. His nephew has been in contact with him.

"My uncle A.J. passed away several years and I just saw Don last weekend and gave him several old pictures I had found online and he was delighted to get them. "

28dreyer, I asked Skip, he told me strictly stock except the injectors get bigger nozzles and folks have a choice of straight ethanol or E-85. Denny Z

I am sorry that it has taken so long to get back to this post; but as I said in my last post, I do think that I have the complete history of this car!

I hope that the photos will help to put the confusion to rest.

The photos from left to right.

    1. This is the car when it was new. 1968.
    2. The cover of Stars and Cars shows the car as raced in 68. Inside you find a photo of the car with Don Rice on the hood and Weld's racing record for the year.
    3. The number 31 car at the Chambersberg auto show on March 23 1969 with what looks to be Ford power.
    4. Al Consoli's photo of the car on dirt sometime in 69. Chev. power.
    5. The next photo is of the car in the pits at Tampa on 2-20-1970.
    6. Lloyd King's photo of the car on the track at Tampa.
7.Sidney Clark with the car after he got it from Weld.
    8. The car when Johnson got it from Clark in September of 1974. (you can just make out Clark's name on the side of the hood
    as in the photo.)
    9. This is the car as raced by Johnson in Texas.
    10. The Moore's picking up the car from Johnson in the 90's.

If you will look at a copy of NSSN from Jan. 28, 1970 you will find an add by Kenny Weld offering his roaster for sale as a modified. ($2980.00)
As a side note, Greg Weld is selling his roadster as a sprinter! ( no cage)

The February 11 issue of NSSN has a photo of Weld on the pole for one of the feature races at Tampa.

I do hope that this will clear up any confusion.

Would you please post a photo of the car from New York.

Well... Clue me in then fella's.

I knew that Larson got killed in what was the Cheesman Offy, however I did not know it was the Dunseth #16 when it happened.

So, my question is, What is the car that is in Speedy Bills collection at the moment that is Restored as the Dunseth car?

    Parts of it?
another Dunseth car from another year?
    Clone?

    Thanks,

    J Shaw

Are you refering to this one? I think this is a second gen car built by Leffler.

If this is the car your talking about Josh, It was a backup car to the #1 and Greg had it built as the #1. The real one started as the 25 went to 16 then 1.

In 67 Dunseth ran a 2 car team, with Weld mainly in the 92 and various others in the 16. Weld won the championship and the 16 finished 12th.

The 25 was never the 16 as far as I know. Leffler purchased the Cheesman team with a spare frame. He ran the 25 until it was destroyed at New Bremen. He then assembled the spare frame. I thought the 16 stayed as the 16 and the 1 car was actually a new frame that was stolen at some point. Anyone?

From what I know, the #16 was sorta the original Cheeseman car but, yes, it was substantionally changed over time. The #92 was a new build that became the #1 in 68. I assume Dunseth/Leffler divested themselves of the 16 in 1968 as they only campaigned the #1 (ie #92) for the 68 season. Not etched in stone, just what I've surmised.

Hmmmm, out of curiosity, I looked this up. Interesting, was there actually 3 Dunseth cars in the 67/68 years? If so, I wonder what happened to the 67 championship winning #92 car?

That was May 3, 1964 at New Bremen. The 16 was "sorta the original Cheesman car"? I think this needs some clarification.

Well, I guess it all depends on where the line is drawn. If the "spare frame" was a spare Pankrantz frame I would consider it still much the original Cheeseman car. Really no different than if it was wrecked under Cheesemans ownership and the frame was replaced, I think history would still consider it 'the Cheeseman 25'.... Just my way of thinking anyway.

The standard I have heard is 50% of the frame. If you have all the bolt-on components, rearend, and motor, and someone else has the frame, they are considered to be the sole owner of "the car". Again, that's just my understanding. I'm probably the youngster of the group here so by no means am I an expert on any of this stuff.

O.K. but just out of curiosity, who sets this "standard" you speak of ?

Yeah, I'm no expert either, just my own personal take on the deal.

    Here's a hypothetical situation-
Steve Kinser wads up his car and says: "I've had enough of this shit! somebody make me an offer I'm going fishing! I just happen to be standing nearby with about mil $ burning a hole in my pocket. I say: "here ya go" and plunk the cash in his hand. I take his rig home unload a spare frame out of the trailer and assemble it with all the good parts. Would I not have Kinsers #11?.... Just saying.

I thought AACA, but I don't know for sure. And no, you wouldn't. If someone won a championship with chassis no.1, wrecked it, and then built chassis no.2, he could not claim he is driving a championship winning car. Also, modern chassis are regularly replaced and rarely ever change hands. If they do they hardly ever remain competitive at the same level.
