Good morning Guys and Gals.Have been thinking about changing my 57 to a Gasser. What steering box are the Tri 5 Gassers with the straight Axles using ? Thanks so much and have a good weelend. Tom (Tired Old Man)
I think you can use the same box but have to find the right pitman arm depending on which front end you're using
I used the stock steering box but used a 62 Chevy 2 pitman arm. Be ready for oil pan issues depending what engine you use. I have a big block and used a Chevy 2 pan.
Stock box and pitman arm. You can also use the stock power steering pitman. Run your draglink over to the passenger side spindle (crossover style) like a Ford.
Wasn't part of the reason of putting a solid axle under a car toget rid of weight? Stock box weighs a ton, how about a reversed Corvair box? What did Blair Speed Shop use on all of their conversions? I'm using a Vega box under my 55 for weight savings and room, but I know the Vega box isn't traditional and the car isn't a solid axle car. Larry T
This is great info Guys. Larry,We put a Vega cross steer under my Grandsons 38 Chevy Truck. The truck is very light and as to putting one under a Tri 5 would you think the Tri 5 may be too heavy ? Thats just a thought but after a lot research on this site the Guys say not to use a Vega on "Fat" fendered cars. Please keep the info coming and maybe something ref to Disc brakes. I took Butch's advice when I asked this same question. I too have a 62 Impala box waiting to be installed. Like Lawman said, Thanks Butch.
Great info right there, I never thought about that being able to work. Great now I'll have to do my 55.
we have done many many tri five straight axles, we always use new front framerails and use a 525 box as its more suited to the weight of the tri 5. and we have used about 30 speedway kits so far... no problems at all with them. we steer both front and rear depending on motor combo or customer preferance... good luck
