Possibly the best known of the "shortened cars":

"The Volkswagen chassis must be shortened 14 inches plus or minus a _ inch to give an 80 inch wheelbase. This is done by removing a section of the floor pan (see sketch) with a torch or chisel and then welded back together again."

I've never seen anything uglier then a shortened Tri 5. What's the purpose other then ruin something?

While I agree that some (not all) shortened Tri5's are ugly, if you want to see something uglier.....check your grammar!

Um, yes they are. Hideous is actually a more suitable term.

here's my 59 shorty wagon-36" out of the middle and pieced the doors. X frame was a pain. I sold it in the 90's. I had thought about making it an altered race car. It was a pisser to drive. it's somewhere in the midwest for sale now, pretty much just as it was. OKAY, NOW you can kick me in the NUTS!!!!

I know this post is way old, but this car is kick ass. I can just picture it a candy purple flake with some lace and tons of 60's chrome and interior. Any updated progress pics of this car?

  14. I was thumbing through an old Rodders Journal (#26) that I recently found brand new in my basement on my desk. I have no idea where it came from so if you gave it to me thanks.

Anyway on page #44 there is a '49 caddy that was featured in a custom publication in '51. It is shortened to a 118" wheel base. Pretty slick looking old car a sedanette turned coupe. So shortening isn't a new concept and when done right it can be pretty smooth. And no I won't rob their picture so get the book or someone else can scan it.

I thought I lost this picture but found it on my phone. This was from the Traders Village swap meet earlier in the year and early in the morning as it was still covered. One of the better ones but, that just my opinion.

The yellow 59 wagon a few posts up ended up in my drive for a while. Cool black diamond interior. I sold it (ebay) to a guy about a hour from me, I think he still has it. He also bought this 57.

Wagons and vans seem to be the only ones that look right.

I have been working on my shorty for 4 years and 6 months away from getting it on the road. Most people can't figure out whats different about it so I say it came that way. I call it the short one

    Looks Great!

  28. There is a chance that I built this 59 in 1969. I was living in Toledo Ohio at the time. I cut down a total of 16 cars from 1960 till 1979.

I'm thinking of shortening my Plymouth 13 1/2 inches so I fit it on a S10 2dr blazer chassis.
