I took this picture of the Stones Woods and Cook Mustang at the end of the Gasser Wars in 1968. It was the end of the original gassers as most everyone was switching to the late model cars as NHRA changed the chassis rules. It never came off the trailer at Mt View that day. It sure caused a ruckas when it pulled onto the track.

No, I wasn't there when Harry blew that.

This might help people who do not know where Lions Drag Strip was.
North Long Beach/Wilmington area. The top is north.
The strip ran at an angle like it shows here that is now a truck/freight terminal.

in comparison, this is Irwindale looking west

    this is looking south/west.
Irwindale had a 3,800 foot strip
It was at the southeast area of the interchange of the 605 and 210 freeways

This is not Paul's Beast. It had a full body, that had hackles, for want of a better word, on the nose piece.

Irwindale featured everything at one point: Excellent drag race events, MX and speedway motorcycle racing. Check out the size of the crowd for an atypical Saturday afternoon of racing. What was amazing was that given the turnout, there were few fights or problems. People acted with an air of deceny for the most part. You would be hard pressed to make that claim today

I did a search on this infamous accident at Indy'70 in this thread.Did not show any pics of the crash in the results so I am going to post this. Most everyone is familiar with this one, where Jim Nicoll gets his fueler cut in half when the clutch let go racing Don Prudhomme.I remember (as best as this abused 62 yr old brain can) Prudhomme on Wide World of Sports being big time shaken up and talking about quitting.

With all the knowledge and experience on this thread, perhaps I can get a logical answer to a question I've had for over 40 years. Why is it the fuel altereds of old, the "groundshakers" like Wild Willie, Pure Hell, etc..... moved the pebbles on the ground around when they did a burnout, but the top fuelers, with virtually the same engine setup, didn't? I heard all kinds of reasons during my racing days, but nothing I could point to and say, yeah, that's it. Anyone help?
