I have been trying to figure out how I want to install the gas tank in my sedan. Coupes are easy bc you can just put in the trunk. I don't want to run the 32 tank. I was just wondering if people wouldn't mind posting some pictures of their tanks and filler cap locations. Thank you.

Are you going to run a back seat?

I put my gas tank, brake booster and master cylinder, and battery all where the backset would have been underneath the floor...

You have the brake booster and master cylinder under the car where the back seat was.....? how long of a brake rod do you have running to it from the pedal....?

Yeah, I didn't really have the room to mount the booster and master cylinder on the firewall or under the floor near the pedal. So I mounted it on the frame on the driver side right in front of the rear end.. I made a long brake pedal rod from all thread and slid a tight fitting piece of tubing over it with jam nuts for strength.. It worked well and fit well.

I don't have any pics, but on my '28 sedan I put in a 16 gal. Jaz fuel cell (poly in a steel can) where the back seat would be and built a sheetmetal box around it just to be extra safe. I was never totally comfortable with having the fuel riding in the car with me though...and no matter what I did I could never totally eliminate the fuel smell from inside the car.

I'd like to see your brake booster and rod set up

what diameter of all -thread did you use and how long is it?

There's a ton of threads on this subject, put it up in the search function box and sit back and read. there's a guy that has his tank mounted inside the frame rails and can cary 23 or so gallons. others with them mounted behind the seat, although im not a big fan of gas inside with you, there really isnt a bunch of places you can mount a tank on these small cars.

Finished picture can barely see it right side in front of rear spring. I initially had a yard sale tank I cut the corner off of to start with, used a 5" piece of truck exhaust pipe for the driveshaft tunnel. Tank was too rotten, after a few attempts to patch much easier to make it from scratch. I built my own the same as this one using the side and top mounting points. A rubber cushioned bolt go's through the floor near the tunnel. Floor raised on pass. side to clear tank. If you have more body back there you would have to run a filler neck out the side somewhere. Maybe a flush fit fuel door with a remote popper? Also, the original gauge can be used in the top of the tank, if it was where you could see it. Maybe a door in the floor in front of the pass. seat? I just had to bend the float arm.

Mine is a 17 gallon RCI tank, #2171. They go for ~$200 new, but I got mine off the HAMB classified for less. The car is still under construction, but it'll be surrounded by an angle-iron framework and a sheetmetal firewall will separate it from the passengers. It's 7" thick so there will be a small (but acceptable) loss of interior space.

Other similar tanks include Tanks #U-9 (steel, 7.5" thick, 17 gal., $250) and Moeller #032718 (poly marine tank, 5.25" thick at top, 8.25" thick at the bottom, 18 gal, $196).

BTW, I saved some pictures posted by fellow HAMBer SVO. I'm basically copying his arrangement, but the credit goes to him.

    Hope this helps.

It promotes the art of DIY. I can't wrap my brain around spending much for a gas tank.
So many people purchase a high dollar tank that really don't fit where they put it. I have two; the steel and welding cost a bunch less than buying one, fit 'zactly where I want them................

Id love to put mine in the dash, but someone has cut the tank part out and filled over the the filler hole in the cowl. It just a problem I've been running through my head and can't come up with a solution I like.

I like the 32 type tank kit my Sedan has. No gas smell at all and looks like it belongs there.

I seen you said you prefer not to put it there, but Im throwing it out there for ya anyway.

    Are you running full fenders?
If so your choices are 32 style which you say you dont want, then there are the saddle bag type which I dont like.
Behind the back seat aint bad.

The other way I did it was by using a custom made tank under the floor in front the diff and behind the tranny.

Holds 23 gallons, see pic's attached, also give good weigh distribution and low center of gravity.

However if you are using anything other than a parallel 4 link that idea wont work either.

My A coupe will still have the fuel tank where henry intended it to be in an A model , never trusted the 32 style or in the trunk , just can't get the image of pintos blowing up , if hit in the rear, out of my mind.

Oh sorry maybe I should put it where my back seat goes and put the filler neck out the quarter window. Then I could put some huge z's in the frame oh and spiderwebs cant forget the spiderwebs.
