That was another issue...I wanted to run a stock fan also in the 32 frame and it didn't leave much room if I had a stock pump..
yes you have to use an electric pump....GMC Bubba helped me out with that and the elcetronic ignition conversion

  5. BTW...if you plan on going the aluminum timing cover/Short Chevy pump route, you'll have to have the nose of the 276/291 cam machined off and use the 330/341/345 DeSoto or 340 SBM timing set...

True hot rodders run whatever they determine works best for their application. Consider Henry (Smokey) Yunick's comment, " The engine does not know the name on its valve cover."

Nothing is as easy as it seems…

For around $100 I can carry a spare rebuilt water pump for my little Dodge Red Ram just in case. Cheap insurance as far as I’m concerned…
    <O:p
For $200 and some odd change I can get a kit to convert my little Dodge to accept a Chebby pump butt wait, there is more that isn’t written on the web but is written in small print in the instructions. I need to get my cam machined and I need a new timing chain cover to get it all to fit for an additional $300. I still don’t have the water pump. So what else am I missing…
    <O:p
I’ll stick with a spare pump for $100…
    <O:p
Maybe the Desoto is an easier conversion but read the small print before you jump in too far…

    291, .060 over

Gary is right, Don't use nothing but the set (timing chain and gears) for the low decks

Yes you have to get the nose of the cam cut-off, but none of the machine work is that hard.
I used to have a step by step instructions on how to do this, but I can find them..

    please share this info.

  16. On 276/291 low deck DeSotos, the cam gear slides onto a tapered nose on the cam and the gear is retained by a nut. 330/341/345 high deck desotos (56,57) have a bolt that retains the timing gear, and no tapered nose. The front of the low deck cam needs to be machined off and the proper sized bolt hole drilled/threaded for a bolt...then you can bolt on a 56/57 timing set. If you are going to use a 340 SBM timing set, a little more machining needs to be done. As I failed to mention in my previous Post, the 340 cam gear is NOT a bolt-on like the Stock 56/57. It's used because new, Stock 56/57 timing sets are supposedly tough to locate. I had no problem locating a Stock set. Of course, all this info is only if you're going to go the aluminum timing cover/SBC pump route. In my case, it was a space saving necessity. If I'd had the room, I would have left the Stock chain case cover intact...

  18. That appears to be it. You'll need to remove the fuel pump eccentric and make sure the cam gear is bolted tight to the cam. If it's a DeSoto engine, it's a 330, 341, or 345, and doesn't need any work done to the cam nose.

It won't with that eccentric bolted on the front...

  26. JTILLE - You obviously have your timing set/cam gear already done...moot point. As stated, the easiest way to go is to find a 276/291 timing set to bolt on the shortened 276/291 cam (which is what I did). Although not a "bolt-on" the 330/341/345 and 340 SBM timing set will work fine if a sleeve is used to take up the .060 difference. BTW, I don't believe I ever said that the 330/341/345/340 SBM timing set was a "bolt-on". I DID say that they could be used...but neglected to add that a sleeve is needed:rolleyes:, thus perpetrating "this bogus crap" about being able to use them...

  27. Gary,
Email Hot Heads and ask them. They do the work to use the 340 timing set and will give you all the details on it...
