*** The Be All, End All, Roadster Lakes Tarp - Tonneau Cover Picture Thread***

I'm in the process of wrapping up my roadster project and am getting ready to find an upholstery shop to have my lakes tarp made. i was trying to find some pictures on the hamb but after searching through quite a few threads i came to the realization that we need an entire thread dedicated to this, so welcome to the Roadster Lakes Tarp picture Show.

lets keep this as on topic as possible, i dont want to see a bunch of 356's and MG's etc. I am really interested in seeing the different ways used to secure them to the body, especially along the doors and cowl.

i will start off with a few pictures i have saved over the last few years to get the ball rolling.

  7. It must have took brass balls to go 100mph on those skins.

  13. Nimrod on here had one of the best looking covers on his 29 roadster,IMO.

Search his name for a thread on how he built it..

  14. Hey Tetanus, did you search the term "tonneau"? Thats how I always find the threads.

Good idea for a picture reference thread!

Hey Tman, yes i used "tonneau" and "tonneau cover" etc but you get mostly references to guys wanting to build bed covers for their trucks. i figured i would try to leave out the confusion and stick with Lakes Tarp since that is mostly what i have seen them referred to in old mags and books, and thats what i have always called them. seems like there should have been a picture thread on this a long time ago since a lot of roadsters in the 40's and 50's had some form of a cover, hopefully we can get a good solid reference for guys looking for some inspiration.

  20. Dont do what I did and rely on snaps. Use some twist type "common sense" fasteners. At least the modern snaps I bought wont keep the tarp on in certain cross wind situations!

interesting, this is a problem since my car will experience crazy winds from all directions where its going. were there certain areas that couldnt take the strain like the corners, or was it in random places depending on the wind. i dont like the look of the twist style kind but was thinking it might be necessary in certain areas.

  25. Just changes in the wind. On the touring if I were to do it over I would use snaps except in 6 palces, each corner and at teh B panel. the passenger side would want to lift and walk off the snaps from the sides.

Lynn bird already built this for his son a few years ago- it's a "coupester" body and it's red oxide, but it has the lettering, rollbar, and moon discs, don't remember if it has a tarp or not...

    Pictures, Lynn?

He told me he was doing it, I didn't hear anything for a while, then I saw it parked at the mall in Burbank when I was going to a movie! Weird way to first see a car you inspired!

Like to do a lakes tarp on mine someday...

  28. Here is mine on my 28 Roadster. My good friend and fellow club member Paul made it for me. It is made from an old cotton canvas top from a 34 Packard. It has lift-a-dot snaps across the front and plain snaps on the side and back.

    Sorry for the crappy pics.

Mine has no zipper. I just unsnap the drivers side and fold it under.
