I've got a lead on a 1963 235 Chevy motor out of a pickup. Ever hear of one? From what I've read, Chevy discontinued them in passenger cars in '62 but still put some in 4wd trucks through '63. Does anyone know if there are any differences between the '63 235 the 58-62 235's? I'm hoping to drop it in my 54 Chevy...
They still used some 261's in '63 4x4 trucks. Never heard of them using any 235's in 1963. Some guys will call a 230 a 235 because they don't know any better. Put your eyeballs on it...
I don't have the numbers off the block right now but the picture shows a wide valve cover with the Chevrolet script on it and has the big tall black air cleaner with a wing on one side....Also has some blue paint on the block...
Distributer in the center of the block = 235 Distributer toward the front of the block = 250 Rounded intake manifold = 235 Squared off intake manifold = 250
I thought I read somewhere that they did use up the remainder of the 235's on some '63 4x4 trucks, but I can't find where I read it right now. There would be no difference in a 235 in a '63 than the earlier engines. In addition to what SanDiegoJoe said, a 235 will have a valve cover held down by 4 screws, easy to spot the differences.
The Standard Catalog of Chevrolet Trucks by John Gunnell lists the 235 as the standard engine for K10/K20 pickups with the 261 being optional for the same trucks in 1963.
I have a 261 made 1963. The engines were made after -62 as replacement engines both for civilian and military use.
The truck 235 probably has mechanical lifters. I believe the 235 car engines had hydraulic lifters, but I could be wrong.
