Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Old-Soul, Aug 25, 2010.

  1. Old Soul forgot to mention Touring's in the title but he already posted a photo of fellow Inland Emperor DoubleTubTrouble's '23 T Touring called "The Mantis" here's a few more photos of The Mantis from through the years.

Okay, definition time. I grew up hot rodding and I'm now 39. To me, a "T bucket" was always the typical T with a shortened bed. Over the past few years I've been hearing people call ANY Model T a "T bucket".

In my sick little mind a "T bucket" is a T with a shortened bed. A "T pickup" has a stock length bed. A "turtle deck T" is exactly that. A "tub" is well, a tub. The term (again, my sick little mind talking) "T bucket" only applied to the Norm Grabowski / Tommy Ivo body styles.

At least that's how I always thought of it. Anyone want to clarify or throw in their thoughts?

I've always followed the definition of the altered wheelbase, kicked frame, suicide front end kinda deal myself. The inclusion of a shortened bed, turtle deck, or lack of a deck are just variations, but in the end game a picture of Grabowski's or Ivo's car pretty much seals the deal. Kinda like the old saying about porn, can't define it, but I know when I see it! But I do see the same thing you do with stuff that doesn't necessarily fit too...

Pretty much how I always looked at it, though I'll call them T roadsters as well from time to time.

Thanks to all the contributors! There's a bunch of great cars I've never seen before, too. I'm excited to see what else may be posted.

There's a social group called The Hot Rod Model T Group that could use some of the energy found in this thread. It's been slow moving but I'd love to see all you fellas there posting.

We seem to have the same viewpoint on this. It's the "fad T" thing that makes me thing T bucket.

Definitely. That's what I tell people I just bought, is a T roadster. Then I hear, "Oh I love T buckets." Doesn't piss me off, just seems to me they don't know what they're talking about... or is it me? At least its not like pulling up to a stop light in my dad's '32 highboy roadster and hearing, "Hey, nice T bucket!"

I should have included roadster, coupe, tudor, closed cab, etc. but didn't want to get too detailed of a list. So is a coupe or a tudor a "T bucket" in anyone's opinion?

Was the term "T bucket" even around in the early years? I always associated the term with mid 60's and later Ivo T styled cars. Of course the term "Tin Lizzy" has been around since the car was new... maybe even before the Model T production?

Just my opinion, it should be an open car. Coupe and tudors and pickup and stuff just kinda go back to hot rods. Tubs can be, but what about C cabs? Been plenty of those done cool over the years! I put them in the definition too, kinda open, but not really; and panels? Where do you draw the line?!

I don't think so, really. I've never heard it used to anything non-roadster and mostly to Ts (and of course some similar non-fords of the era that look like Ts, such as the Dodge roadsters). Mostly, I've heard it in reference to pre 26 roadsters but there are 26/27 out there that people refer to as T-Buckets, I'm sure.

Although not technically a T Bucket we have to include Bid Daddy Roth's Beatnik Bandit. Sorry if it has already been mentioned.

  30. Here are my T submissions.
The first one I built in a parking space at Coast Gaurd Station Humbolt Bay, CA.
Got most of it done then got orders to go to Seattle. so my dad came and we towed it to Phoenix where it waited 9 months for me to "get out" and finish it. The 2nd one I built in 1990. The third was by a Phoenix guy Dan Johnson. I heard his dad sold it for $1800 as soon as he went on his church "mission". Now that's a real Christian thing to do. The 3rd was built by a friend of Rick Stewart in Phoenix, I dodn't remember the name. The last is my all time favorite. I've only seen it in this magazine.
