I'll second that... I remember it as top straightaway speed, not a lap average speed.

  2. Sounds extremely plausable to me. In a super speedway mod? Yeah and as we talked about in the beginning, NASCAR would not like any other division to show up their top division, the Cup cars. Especially by Saturday night bullring drivers!

So, that would be in practice and not an official lap?

The official 196.8 was still almost 3mph faster than Baker's pole of 194.009
1980 Daytona Pole and race speed at top of page.

  9. I didn't remember Troyer flipping a mod like that. I thought he did that in a full-size Cup car.

Maynard Troyer crashed and rolled that Modified in late August 1974.

Mike Loescher also drove the 29,before he moved to Florida. He told me he didn't feel safe in the car. He vacated the ride, and yeah, this is Pete Walker.

At the time, Mike was building chassis. He didn't feel comfortable with the way it was built. His actual exact words were "it's a death trap". I wasn't at Oswego that fateful day, so I don't know for sure if Mike was right.
The owners of the car, the Loden Brothers, didn't return to racing until the mid '80's, when young Andy Loden, raced a late model.

And on to the pinto years...

Some of us may curse Maynard Troyer for being one of the forefather's, if not the most successful builders, of the turn-key or cookie cutter modifieds of today. But, back when he was racing he was one helluva driver and he built some neat and fast machines. Even though I was down on Long Island, I couldn't wait to see a picture of the newest Troyer creation each Spring. I was fortunate to see him race on LI in the 70's and I took in the Race of Champions and various big races at Trenton and Pocono where I saw him race. He won a ton of races and track championships including all of the prestigious races of the day, the ROC, the Spring Sizzler, the Classic.....

Katman43: I don't look at this site every day, so I just saw the post about Jackie Wilson. Thanks for the info!! Jackie was quite young when we saw him race. Lebanon Valley was quite a place for us. We were used to the jalopys up here in Vt. When we saw that track and those cars, we were pretty impressed!! :eek:Neal
