So, my gas tank was full of crap, so I pulled it out, took it to a shop and had it cleaned, and the guy put a liner in it. I get it back a week later, put it in the car, fill it up with gas, and nothing. Not getting any gas out of the tank. I messed around with it, blew air into the tank, no problem. Blew air through the fuel line, no problem. I tried 3 fuel pumps, 2 mechanical, and 1 electric. Still nothing. I have 3 times as much gas in the tank now as I did when I pulled it. I can't get any gas to come out of it. Anybody have any suggestions ?
Potential problems: 1. Fuel pickup has gotten pinched somehow. 2. Fuel pickup has gotten bent so that it's still not into the gas. 3. (likely) the liner didn't adhere, and you have sucked part of the sloshing compound into the fuel line. This happens quite a bit if people don't know what they are doing. 4. Fuel hose going from line to tank isn't stout enough and is getting sucked shut.
Do this but be very careful. Do not use full line pressure. It will blow the gas tank. See if you can borrow a MityVac and try sucking gas from the fuel pump side. A small pin hole will keep gas from coming forward. http://www.mityvac.com/
Of course, gotta get the tank draining out the outlet first. I can understand how it'd be confusing that air can be blown into the tank through the outlet easy enough, yet fuel won't come out. I imagine that maybe the liner compound got in there as Racewriter mentioned, and it's acting as a flap-valve...and doing exactly that...letting air in, but doing a good impression of a bathtub drain-plug. If the outlet is straight, a drill twisted by hand might get it open. Don't use a drill-motor...even battary-powered...sparks...fire. For that matter, be careful if you're using an incandescent trouble-light...fluorescent is safer. A piece of coat-hanger wire with a short bend on the end might be useful for digging it out too. Good luck.
One more thought, 0rg0. If worse comes to worse, and you need to remove the tank again, siphon the fuel out through the filler-tube.
you never put any kind of silicone on anything near the fuel sender or the tank anywhere it will swell in the gas and fill everything and cause a blockage also second on the fuel hose sucking shut.
So, I guess I'm gonna drop the tank, again, and see if I can get gas out of it on the bench. Anybody ever convert the drain plug into a fuel line ?
Better that coat hanger for getting through the pick-up is the core from a speedo cable. It will follow all curve and corners. A hand drill (brace) to turn it wil help. I have cleaned a lot of small tube this way.
If you try that, look how motorcycle petcock drains are assembled - usually with a standpipe strainer -- have you tried a boat tank primer bulb ?
Now I have slept on it. I think the idea that some of the liner is acting like a flap is the problem. I'm gonna try a big guitar string through the pick up tube, and see if can clear any blockage out. Wish me luck !
