I was wondering if anyone can give me there experience witht eh different ratios that are available for the banjo rear end. Im basically trying to figure out the best ring an pinion for my banjo rear end. IM also trying to figure out what type of highway cruising speed I will have. IM using a ford 3spd topload transmission. Thanks
Most are 4:11, some are like 3:54 NOT good for cruising> I bought the Speedway 3:25. Still not real great.
A lot depends on what/how much power you have . A stock 100HP flat V-8 ain't gona work with anything lower than the 3.54s very well. A bit of a hill or good head wind and you will be looking for second gear.
I'm running a 3:54 in one of my A's and 3:78's in two others. Tried 3:25's in a roadster and wasn't happy either.
I've got 3.54s in the QC in my A roadster right now. Hopped up flathead, '39 gearbox, and 7.50x16's. Nice and peppy around town, cruises at @ 65 pretty comfortably, will go 75-80 without breaking a sweat, but the engine is definitely more comfortable around 65... I want to try a little taller gear for long distance cruising.
I believe Getz originally made the 3:25's to be used in a quick change for the Dry Lakes and espically Bonneville.
Im running 3.05 in mine (mild 239 flatty w/39 box) it pulls around town just fine and highways @ 70-75 easily with 7.50/16's rear tires I tried a set of 3.48s but they seemed a bit low for good highway cruising
What Ive got going in my 39 ford is a stock 350 sbc hooked up to a 39 trans., banjo rear end, with 3.78 gear ratio.(center section stamped 9/34 ?) Tires are 600-16 on the rear. As it is now I feel that Im running too high of rpms for highway speed, The speed Im looking at is around 65 to 70 mph. Would a 3.54 or a 3.25 gear ratio help me. Ive looked at Speedway and The Hot Rod Works and what they have, but still unsure of what set to go with. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you, Hot LZ
3.78s seem to be the most common. It's what I have in the modified. I'd rather have lower because of the overdrive.
Point of reference: I'm running the 3:78's in a CCPU with a banger and a T-5 and a huckster with a 1.8 SOHC engine and 4-speed. The Zipper is a 3:54 with a '39 transmission and Zephyr gears.
