Best Bonneville days?

Thinking of going to Speed Week. I can't go for the entire week. What are the best days to be there? Is it the same scedule everyday?

 

Opening day is pretty cool. After the weekend, there are some that head back home/work.

Take a look at landracing.com , they may have info on the schedule.

Good luck on a room, if you don't already have one.

 

Rooms start becoming available later in the week as people go home. This late in the game, finding a place to stay can be problematic. You can check the pictures I took last year since they are in galleries by day. Just go to the web site in my signature and click on the Bonneville link.

My disclaimer - only been once and that was last year.

 

Tech inspection is at the beginning, good chance for a close up look at all the cars. Also, cars start leaving mid-week, so fewer to see as time goes on.

 

Any day on the Salt is pretty much better than any other day.

 

Just depends on if you want to get up close and personal with the cars/drivers.................
that would be tech......................................if you want to wander around the starting line on any of of the coarses, and watch the cars start.................or watch them go by at 100/200/300/400...................then anytime is good. I personally like the tech days as everything is a little slower...................IMHO

Go for the first few days because there are more cars, hot rods and cool famous people.

Dont worry about staying at a hotel, camp out on the salt. Its free and there is plenty of room.

 

Any day is good, but Saturday thru Tuesday are probably the premium days.

 

Be out there at sunup, its the best & coolest time of day. After about 11 if you dont have your own shade it will toast your brain. Picture being inside a nuclear reactor. Wear as much white as you can find, no black shoes, youve been warned ! I look like an ice cream man out there in white painters clothes. A pit bike is a must if you arent flying in too.

 

If your wanting to watch the "big boys" run, I would suggest Monday or Tuesday or later. They will have worked out their "bugs" by then & the lines will be a tiny bit shorter & they will be running the 350mph plus. If happen to find a room or just want to go to Speedweek and have the time, I would suggest arriving on Saturday early in the morning and sitting @ the "Tech" inspection and listening and taking mental notes.

Make sure you pack PLENTY of sunscreen and a good pair of sunglasses and a cooler FULL of ice and water with a beer or two tossed in. And bring something to eat, the line for the "burger stand" is kind of long.

Oh yea, and don't forget to put sunscreen on EVERYTHING (your beans), the sun reflects up and will burn everything.

 

Sleep in your Peterbilt like I did... or commute back and forth from Salt Lake City like I also did...it's worth it.

How does camping at the bend in the road work???? My girlfriend and I just made a last minute decision to go this year.

Do you have to pay or do you just pick a spot and set up?

Thanks for the quick response. One more for ya, we were thinking of bringing a small charcoal grill... is that a no-no????

 

I've seen pics of campfires there, made by burning a magnesium block. Charcoal should not be a problem.

 

A chacoal grill at the bend in the road camp ground is allowed. One of the best Mexican resturaunts anywhere is at the truck stop at exit four. The truck stop also has water, ice, pay showers, and cheaper gas than in town. For the best (cheapest) breakfast in town head to the Red Garter casino on the far end of town. Beyond the Red Garter is Smiths grocery, they have what you need. Have fun, - - - - -

 

If you pitch a tent at the bend in the road, scope things out and make sure that it is out of the way of traffic patterns through the camp ground. And a ways away from the porta pots, they get a bit rank later in the week. Make sure you stake the tent down good, some guys are probably still telling the story about chasing mine across the campground in 1998.

If I wasn't going on the first weekend, I'd plan on maybe Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. By thursday racers are ready to head home unless they are really hunting a record.

I'd take a beach umbrella for shade and maybe make a stand for it to stand in. They don't want pegs driven in the salt and you might want to move around too often to want to set up one of the Ez Up tent things. Plus if you walk away from the car and that spot you can fold it up and not worry about it blowing away.

And the guys are right, there is at least one story every year about some guy who wore baggy shorts and went commando who fried the boys out there on the salt.
